How Do You Organize an Eclipse Party? You Planet.

National Honor Society hosted an Eclipse Field Day at NCHS on April 8, 2024. The fun and festivities were everywere: kickball, temporary tattoos, face painting, Karaoke, and much more. Students and staff were then treated to quite a show by the sun and the moon. Special thanks to Honor Society students and their sponsors Mrs. Maschhoff and Mrs. Patton for creating this opportunity.

It's hard to resist a great game of kickball.

Scarlet and Addie can't get the goal to stay up. Boo for wind!

Cheyenne and Carly are ready for volleyball domination.

"You put your right leg in, you put your right leg out..."

Lucy, Shelby, and Brooke have strength in numbers with ther karaoke.

Kinzie, Oakley, and Alyssa know picking the perfect T-Swift song is key to karakoe domination.

Vita, Keeley, Leo, Nevaeh, and Tanner are loving the sun and fun!

It's all smiles and excitement from Shawn, Faith, Jaylin, and Robin.

All O'Rears were present and accounted for.

Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Kollbaum shared this cool experience together.

The temporary tattoo and face painting station was a popular destination.

Addison and Nori made sure everyone had their special viewing glasses. Safety first!

Mackenzie, Brynn, Erica, Austi, Taylor, and Keeghan are feeling very tough with their new ink.

Blaine sings karaoke while his hype man, Harrison, gets the crowd wound up.

It's time to test out the glasses for the main event!

Merytt and Chloe (above), and Mackenzie, Sydney, and Quentin  (below) are eager for the eclipse.

Addie, Calvin, and Collin are gearing up to match Brady's eclipse energy.

A gathering of Swifties to watch the eclipse!

A Little Eclipse Humor 🌞🌚

Why is the sun more educated than the moon?

Because it has millions of degrees.

Anticipation! But we're all ready and in place!

Coach Renth probably got tired of hearing, "Is it time yet?!"

Coach Malawy watched the eclipse from the baseball field. Truly one with the diamond.

This is a drone shot of the city of Nashville from NCHS. All of the street lights are on!

It's almost totality time!

Yes, there is a coolness factor, but Mr. O'Rear is also about the SCIENCE!

These drone images from Mr. Welte (above and below) give us a birds eye view of the NCHS campus during the eclipse. Notice how street lights and solar powered lights came on during the eclipse.

Many thanks to the following students and staff who submitted photos and videos of their experience: Heather Arnold, Vita Bartolotta, Leo Dunahee, Mrs. Heggemeier, Mrs. Kollbaum, Erica Kujawa, Mrs. Patton, Coach Renth, Jaylin Stofferahn, Lucy Walters, and Mr. Welte.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR AT NCHS

March 18th is the first day of the fourth quarter of the 2023 - 2024 school year, and these final days of the school year will pass so very quickly.

One of the many highlights at the end of the year is the junior and senior prom.  This year's prom theme is "Enchanted Garden," and the absolutely stunning invitations are being sent out this week.

Mrs. Heggemeier's students designed prom invitations, and submitted them anonymously to Junior Class Sponsor Mrs. Spenner and the Prom Committee who voted for their top choice.

Congratulations to senior MACKENZIE BAUZA for her prom invitation design being selected.

Juniors and seniors, be certain to submit your favorite "school-appropriate" songs for the PROM DJ to Mrs. Spenner in the Google Form shared in the email sent out to you so you can put your dance moves to good use at Prom.

NCHS Student Section Qualifies for IHSA Student Section and Spirit Showdown

The NCHS Student Section has been selected as one of four finalists in the IHSA Student Section and Spirit Showdown for Class 1A / 2A.   The IHSA Student Section and Spirit Showdown was created by the Student Advisory Committee (SAC) for school communities to showcase their student sections, school spirit, and community service.   In order to be considered, the school must submit a 90 second - 3 minute video highlighting their student sections at various interscholastic contests, school spirit activities and traditions, and community service.  NCHS senior Abby Knepp created the video submission for NCHS featuring the NCHS Nest.  The submissions will be judged by the SAC, and representatives from the finalists will be invited to attend the 2024 IHSA Girls Basketball State Finals held in Bloomington - Normal from 2/29/24 - 3/2/24 when the Student Section and Spirit Showdown winners will be crowned.

WHETHER IT'S YOUR FIRST TIME OR YOUR NINETY-NINTH TIME, NCHS WANTS YOU IN "THE NEST."

ALL ARE WELCOME SO BUZZ ON IN.

Posi-Teen Week 2024 was Posi-Tively Fun!

January 29 - February 2 was full of spirit dress-up days, fun evening activities, and recognition of our Senior Posi-Teens. These students were chosen by the staff based on their overall positive attitude toward staff and students, kindness, and helpful demeanor.

2024 Senior Posi-Teens are Nevaeh San Nicolas, Abby Knepp, Makenzie Pedtke, Brooke Harris, Joel Bergmann, Breckin Baum, Harrison Zgonina, Brady Stein, Blaine Emrick, Lucy Walters, and Colin Rolf. Not present: Tailor Pelczynski. These seniors were treated to lunch at El Indio on Thursday, February 1, as well as other treats throughout the week.

Trivia Night!

It was a smaller crowd than normal on Monday, January 29, but knowledge was still tested. Here's a question from the National Parks category that you can try out:

Q: Which of the following national parks is the newest?

Answer located under our first place winners.

Tanner and Robin sport their PJs for Trivia Night. They were great hosts!

FIRST PLACE! Landon Pierce, Annie Shubert, Kaylee Mattingly, and Ian Laur

National Parks Question Answer:

Volleyball Tournament!

These shenaniganizers are ready for serious business.

One of the great things about Posi-Teen Volleyball is that you play on teams with people you don't always encounter in your day. It's a great way to meet different people at NCHS.

The most popular night of Posi-Teen Week is the Volleyball Tournament. On Wednesday, January 31, the gym was packed with teams ready to serve, set, and spike!

Shoutout to Coach Taylor and Coach Reeder for serving as volunteer refs.

These freshmen are ready for their first Posi-Teen Volleyball.

Paint and Movie Night!

Jaden Harvey proudly presents his creation.

Heather Arnold and Addison Stambaugh are well on their way to a masterpiece.

We love this artwork! What was more fun? Creating art or spending time with friends. Probably both!

Painting AND watching Super Mario Bros.? Students said yes to that fun idea on Thursday, February 1. So many great works of art!

Gavin Geppert and Ian Laur have quite the contrasting style.

Case Jebron and Kevin Campanella showcase their talents.

Seniors Madison Haege, Tanner Brooks, and Robin Habeck having fun.

Shout out to Senior Abby Knepp, whose button design (left) was chosen for this year's Posi-Teen observance. A very special "Thank You" to Mrs. Schultz and the Lifesavers for organizing a fun and Posi-Tive week for our students.

Two NCHS Students Receive 2024 Scholastic Art Awards

The Southern Illinois Regional Affiliate of The Scholastic Art Awards is an art competition with artwork displayed at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon. The competition had 893 artwork submissions and selected 197 pieces of artwork for awards. NCHS senior Brooke Harris received a Gold Key Award for an acrylic painting titled, Rusty Radom.  Brooke's Gold Key Awarded Artwork will be submitted for competing at the national level at the Scholastic Art Awards in New York.  NCHS sophomore Annie Shubert received an honorable mention for oil pastel drawing titled, Porkchop.  All pieces of artwork will be on display from January 14th - February 11, 2024 at the Mitchell Museum at the Cedarhurst Center for the Arts.

Annie shared, "I'm very happy that the judges of the contest liked my piece enough to give it an award, and I wasn't even sure it would make it past the first judging round.  The picture was taken in the backyard of my mom's house of my dog Porkchop, and he passed away a few weeks before I decided to make the oil pastel piece."

Annie Shubert's Porkchop

Brooke shared, "My artwork is called Rusty Radom, and it is made from acrylic paint.  I based my painting off of a picture I took of a shed and a chair that's in my yard.  I really like the original picture because it had very strong sun rays shining on the chair, which I tried to recreate in my painting since it's inspired by Edward Hopper, who's known for his high contrast paintings.  My painting is of a really familiar place for me, but I liked the isolation of the chair and how alone it looked.  I was very excited and shocked that I won this award and was especially shocked when I heard it won a Gold Key award.  I honestly feel like I've made some cooler artworks than this one, so I'm a little shocked that this one did so well in the competition, but I'm very very happy that the judges ended up liking it!

Brooke Harris's Rusty Radom

Art Teacher Mrs. Schultz shared, "Brooke and Annie should be very proud of their hard work, talent, and unique styles they bring to the art classroom. Brooke's art style is usually bold and bright with color. Her artwork is highly detailed and usually constructed larger than required. Annie likes to use graphite pencils and watercolor paints. Her drawings and paintings have a strong 3-dimensional quality. They both go above and beyond expectations. It is a joy to work with them!"
