Emma Behrmann Breaks School Records in Field Events at Freeburg

The eclipse was not the only big news on April 8. At the Freeburg High School Track Meet, Emma Behrmann broke her school records in BOTH the Long Jump AND Triple Jump.

We asked Emma to share her thoughts about this accomplishment. Emma shared, "This track season has been going really well so far! One of my goals this year definitely was to try and break my previous long and triple jump records I broke as a freshman last year. Monday was one of those days where I was feeling really good mentally and physically, and the weather turned out to be nice. In the long jump, I was close to the record on my three jumps I took, but I wanted to get the record that day. On my fourth and final attempt, I decided to just go for it and hoped my jump would be far enough, which it was! I was super excited and so was my dad. I also learned I tied the meet record that day, which was awesome. After that, I had to do triple jump, which I almost didn't do that day so I could save my legs for other events. But I changed my mind and chose to do it since I did well in long jump. I'm glad I did it because on my first attempt, I broke my old record by almost a foot! I was in shock and full of adrenaline! My dad was super proud and excited for me! It was an amazing day, and I hope the rest of the season for our team goes well!"

"It's better to look ahead and prepare than to look back and regret."

~Jackie Joyner-Kersee

Check out those jumps!  In the Long Jump, Emma broke the 17' 6" record with a 17' 8.5" jump. In the Triple Jump, Emma completed a 36' 5.5" jump, which breaks the 35' 7.35" record.

Evan Eberhart Runs at Indoor Track State

Evan Eberhart has been working extremely hard at improving his long distance running over the winter months. He has trained and competed in a few indoor meets prior to the upcoming outdoor season.  Through this training and competition, Evan was able to increase his State ranking this winter, and he was invited to participate in indoor Track State at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington on March 22, 2024. Evan's goal was to set a new PR in the 1600, and place in the top 8 in Illinois. He came up just short of both goals.  His PR is 4:41.02, and at this meet he ran 4:41.20 placing him 11th out of 15 runners.

When asked to comment on his experience, Evan shared, "The experience was pretty cool!  It's really nice to see winter training pay off how you plan.  Training in the winter is more preferable in my opinion because of cooler temperatures and it isn't so humid.  Base work is the most important thing in the off season so I focused on high mileage, training about 60 miles per week, implementing tempos to improve my breathing, some interval training to make sure that my legs can still move somewhat quick, and a weekly long run to cap it off.  Staying consistent and doing all of the little things right is what makes running fast possible for anyone.  With indoor season over, Coach Kell, the team, and I will be focusing more on speed to really enhance our stride while maintaining the base that we built over the winter to keep dropping times as quickly as possible." Coach Kell added, "Regardless of the outcome, I am happy that Evan got the chance to experience indoor Track State, and am proud of his efforts.  We know what we want to work on going into the outdoor season, and expect a strong showing at outdoor State later this year."

Senior Silas Hill accompanied Evan and offered additional support.

NCHS Hornette Basketball Team Makes Generous Donation

The NCHS Hornette Basketball Team has shown that they have goals on the court, but they also have goals off the court and within their community.  Coach Witte explained, "Each year the girls basketball team is picking an organization that we can support and help raise awareness for."   The Hornettes hosted a fundraising contest called "Our BANK is OPEN" during each home game halftime.  Fans bought a chance or chances to be selected to shoot a series of shots for the opportunity to win a cash prize.  Coach Witte shared, that "[h]alf of the proceeds from ticket sales went to our program and half of the proceeds this year were donated to Angel for Autism."  He concluded with,  "We are very proud of this," as well they should be, and NCHS is very proud of this community focus.

Angel for Autism is an organization dedicated to the memory of 2001 NCHS graduate Traci Storey, a beautiful, intelligent, and kind young woman whose life tragically ended in 2008.  Traci was a speech and language pathologist and was working with children with autism.  To learn more about Angel for Autism and Traci's legacy, click this link.

The Hornettes donated $462.50 to Kristen Storey on behalf of Angel for Autism.

Hornettes Are State Runner Up at IHSA State Finals

What a tremendous season for the Hornettes this 2023 - 2024 year earning a ticket to the IHSA State Finals and finishing with an amazing second place finish.  Congratulations, ladies.  We enjoyed watching you and hope you remember every moment of your dedication, effort, and teamwork.

The first game of the State Tournament at CEFCU Arena in Normal on 2/29/24 was a Hornette win against Robinson with a score of 52 - 36.  The 16- point victory was led by Makayla Gajewski with 16 points and Emma Behrmann with 15.  With the win, the Hornettes were up against Peoria Notre Dame in the championship game on Saturday, 3/2/24.  That game proved to be a battle in which the Hornettes wouldn't admit defeat.  They rallied late in the third quarter coming back from a 9-point deficit to tie the score at 46 - 46 with just over 2 minutes to play.  Unfortunately, the Peoria Notre Dame Irish had the last possession and shot, which fell in with just 1.3 seconds left on the clock.  The final score was 48 - 46 against the Hornettes.  A tough loss for the youthful team as their hopes of a State Championship were mere points away, but they definitely have nothing to hang their heads about.  They finished the season 33 - 4 and as the IHSA State Class 2A Runner Up.  That's a truly amazing accomplishment.

CONGRATULATIONS, HORNETTES, ON A SPECTACULAR SEASON AND A CLASS 2A STATE RUNNER UP FINISH.  ❤️💙

Hornettes Are Crowned Super-Sectional Champions and Headed to IHSA State

In front of an amazing crowd of supporters, the Nashville Hornettes, ranked No. 3 in the IHSA State Poll, defeated Central Southeastern by a score of 41 - 32 and punched their ticket to the Final Four at the IHSA State Tournament in Normal.  The Hornettes led all of the game except for the first possession.  CSE, however, never went away...always pushing the Hornettes  even into the fourth quarter when they trailed the Hornettes by only four points with 3:51 remaining on the clock.  Freshman Summer Brinkmann told the Muddy River Sports: “I wasn’t worried in the first half, but when (CSE) brought it, I was kind of worried a little bit.  But I’ve got my team behind me.”  With this win, the Hornettes move to 32-3 on the season and will face Robinson in the first game of the IHSA State Tournament at CEFCU Arena at Illinois State University in Normal on Thursday, 2/29/24.  Game time is 3:45 p.m.

Hornettes Are Crowned Sectional Champions

In a tremendously fast-paced and exciting game on Thursday, 2/22/24, the Class 2A, No. 3 ranked Hornettes beat the Class 2A, No. 2 ranked Central Cougars with a score of 46 - 34.  In a game of speed and referee-deemed repeated jump balls, the Hornettes were in control the majority of the game leading at the end of each quarter: 7 - 5 (1st), 16 - 15 (2nd), and 27 - 25 (3rd).  The Hornette scorers were led by Makayla Gajewski who had 16 points and six rebounds. Other top scorers included Samantha Brinkmann with 11, Summer Brinkmann with nine, Emma Behrmann with eight points and six rebounds, and Avery Reeder with two points.  Nashville (31 - 3) plays Camp Point Central in the Super-Sectional on Monday, 2/26/24 at Vandalia High School.

Mikayla Gajewski, who led the team in points, told the Southern Illinoisan, "I was just really excited to play tonight.  I came in here thinking that I'm in control and going to play as hard as I can for our seniors and the rest of us to get to state."

Head Coach Dempsey Witte recapped the game with the Southern Illinoisan, "We were able to hit some shots and spread the floor on themWe're a tough matchup for a lot of people because teams have to play us man and that helps us because we're hard to guard."  In reference to a regular season match up, Witte share, "Last time we played them, we didn't have Summer.  Tonight, we were healthy and that made a difference. We also did a great job defensively. Breese Central is an unbelievable team. To hold them to 34 points... we'll take it."  When he was asked about the referees' calling of eight jump balls in only the first half, Witte related, "That's two good teams going after itIt was a good high school basketball game. It was real physical and well played by both teams."

NCHS Hornets Near the End of Regular Season

Hornet boys basketball against the rival Pinckneyville Panthers is always a highlight of the season, but this 2023 - 2024 year there wasn't much to unfortunately highlight for the Hornets in the match up on Friday, 2/9/24.  The Hornets fell to the Panthers with a score of 71 - 39.  The Hornets now 16 - 12 are now 16 - 12 for the season and 5 - 3 in the conference.  Head Coach Stote Reeder told the Southern Illinoisan, "I can't explain the third quarter.  Defensively, we were about as bad as we could have been and we didn't play great on the offensive end.  The game plan just fell apart."  Following this loss, the Hornets will regroup and will end their regular season with two home games.

Stingers Finish All Season Competitions in First Place

Coach Jennifer Maschhoff posted on Facebook on Saturday, 2/3/24 after the IDTA Highland Regional that "the [Stingers] went 5 for 5 [with] 1st place finishes at IDTA competitions this season."  What a tremendous accomplishment to this team and a motivator as they head to IDTA State competition in Peoria the weekend of February 9, 2024.

An UNDEFEATED season can bring out the silliness.

Coach Jennifer Maschhoff shared, "It's all a state of mind is our motto this year.  If you feel hurt - power through.  If you missed the choreography - learn it.  GET IT DONE!   We tried a new genre of dance that Nashville is not known for and we are crushing it.  We go into the state competition with five first-place trophies, but that doesn't mean anything to the amount of memories and treasured time spent with the three seniors and the rest of the team.  These girls genuinely get along, fight for each other, and when something doesn't go right, instead of placing blame they build each other up.  Our goal this year is to score in the high 80s and bring home a trophy - it isn't an impossible dream.  In the end, as long as the girls are having fun while dancing that is all that matters."

Congratulations to senior Merytt Zgonina who qualified as a soloist at the Highland Regional Competition.

Senior Nevaeh SanNicolas shared about the season: "This has definitely been a great year for the Stingers, and I’m so happy that I have been able to enjoy it with such an amazing group of people. I would like to thank my teammates and my coaches for making this such a great senior year. I can’t wait to compete with my teammates at IDTA State and show everyone our hard work!”

Senior Merytt Zgonina shared, "This season has truly been the most uplifting and memorable year yet.  This team that I have gotten the chance to dance with over the past year is an amazing, inspiring, talented, and supportive group of girls.  My coaches are two unbelievably helpful, determined, and dedicated women.  Without them, our team would be missing the most important aspect of who we are as a team.  We have been blessed with winning every single competition this year.  With that in mind, it shows that myself and these girls know how to work together and get it done.  Personally, hearing my solo qualified for state this past weekend at our last regional competition made me super emotional and grateful that I have the opportunity to do something that special with my teammates by my side.  When my name was called and all of my teammates rushed to me and hugged me, it was the best feeling knowing I truly had that much support.  With these teammates, I know no matter what occurs at the IDTA State Finals this weekend, we will give it our all and continue to support one another."

CONGRATULATIONS, LADIES, AND BEST OF LUCK AT IDTA STATE.

NCHS Hornettes Are the Undefeated SIRR Conference Champions

The Hornettes faced their last conference foe on Thursday, 2/1/24, when they placed DuQuoin.  Without a doubt, the Hornettes dominated that game winning 83 - 37.  With the win, the team finished conference play with a perfect 10 - 0 record.  Head Coach Dempsey Witte told the Southern Illinoisan that "winning the conference was a goal, but now the focus is on the postseason."  The Hornettes will play their first post season game at the Mater Dei regional on Tuesday, 2/13/24, at 6:00 p.m. against the winner of the Althoff and Wesclin game.

Mackenzy Pedtke, one of the only two seniors on the team, told the Southern Illinoisan, “I love this team. It’s probably my favorite team that I’ve played on. We work so hard every single day. The coaches help us get better. The younger players are just now learning varsity basketball. They have such a good mindset.”  To advance beyond tthe regional, Pedtke believes the team needs skill and determination."  She said, "We just have to keep fighting to get better every single day.”

The Hornette offense against DuQuoin was led by Abby Knepp, who made six 3-pointers to put her in the record book as one of the top 5 NCHS Hornettes for 3-pointers in a single game.  Other double-digit scorers included Emma Behrmann with 14, Summer Brinkmann with 13, and Samantha Brinkmann with 11.  Other points tallied were by Makayla Gajewski (8), Pedtke (7), Avery Reeder (6), Claire Stiegman (3), and Schmale (2).

Summer Brinkmann puts up a lay up.

Avery Reeder shoots over a DuQuoin defender.

AreaSports.net posted the Class 2A IHSA Regional and Sectional brackets on their Facebook page.  Anyone following girls' basketball knows that it's a challenging regional for the Hornettes.  Head Coach Dempsey Witte told the Southern: “We just have to keep getting better as a team, especially defensively,” he said. “We have a stacked regional with Breese Mater Dei (defending state champ) in it. It will be a challenge no matter who we play.”

The SIRR Conference Champion Hornettes would LOVE to have a full house packing the Mater Dei Knight gym to cheer them on in their first game of Regional post-play.

Girls Golfers Are Honored

Coach Doug Kell recently held the recognition banquet for the 2023 Golf Team.  Honorees included Katie Kurwicki as Most Improved and Brynn Stiegman as Most Valuable Golfer.  The top 6 golfers (at least for the majority of the year) Brynn, Shelby Thorson, Zoe Lopez, Karlie Stein, Lily Emge, and Arabella Alfeldt all received the "Success Award"...We Cannot Achieve S ccess Without U.  This award was given out instead of a Hornette Award.  Coach Kell explained that "it made more sense to do the Success Award because to be quite honest, at one point or another, every girl that received that award made a vital contribution to the team score which allowed us to win an event."  Coach Kell continued, "Team stats don't sound impressive (we had a record of 5 wins and 13 loses); however, of those 5 wins three were in major 18 hole events (Conference, Regional, and Okawville Invite).  The other two wins were in 9 hole matches.  We also finished in 2nd place at Sectional and third place finishes at the Massac Invite and the Nashville Invite.

I feel the season was a HUGE success!  The Conference and Regional wins, and the 2nd place finish at Sectional (which qualified us to participate in the State tournament) are very hard to achieve.  The competition gets better every year, and this team worked very hard all season.  Their successes are well deserved."

Katie Kurwicki, Zoe Lopez, Shelby Thorson, Brynn Stiegman, Lily Emge, Karlie Stein, Arabella Alfeldt

Coach Kell concluded his remarks with, "A special congratulations goes out to Brynn Stiegman and Shelby Thorson for qualifying individually at State.  Also, congratulations to Zoe Lopez for signing to play golf with University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy next year."

NCHS Cheer Headed to IHSA State Competition

The NCHS Cheerleaders are the ones who are on the sidelines cheering on the other athletic teams, but they are more than just everyone else's cheerleaders.  They are a strong athletic team that competes on the mat for their own recognition.  On Saturday, 1/27/24, the NCHS Cheerleaders completed in the Mt. Vernon sectional against 17 squads in their division.  The coaches shared, "We had to place in the top five in order to qualify for state, and we earned fifth place [allowing us] to qualify."  IHSA state is scheduled for Friday and Saturday  (2/2/24 - 2/3/24) in Bloomington at the Grossinger Arena.  The cheerleaders take the mat on Friday at 12:25 p.m. and compete against 24 other squads in the preliminary round of state. The top 10 squads move onto Saturday for finals.   The competition will be livestreamed on NFHS Network.

Senior Brooke Harris shared, "We are so incredibly proud and excited that we made it to IHSA State for cheer.  I feel like we were up against some of the most challenging teams in our state at our sectional at Mt. Vernon High School.  Even though I did not get to participate in the routine this year because of my injury, I still have tried my hardest to encourage the rest of the team and I am so proud of what they accomplished.  One thing I think we did differently that helped us make it to the top 5 was increasing our difficulty in some of our stunts, adding more tumbling into the routine, and practicing so hard. This hard work really paid off because we beat multiple teams that we have previously lost to and are very talented.  We were so worried about whether we would place in the top 5, so hearing our name be announced was definitely a highlight for my cheer career."

Senior Alissa Tyler shared,  "I am very excited to have the opportunity to go to IHSA State. I have been non stop thinking about it ever since we found out we made it. Our team has put in many hard working hours of practice. The long hours have definitely paid off. There have been many ups and downs, but this is by far the best one yet."

Source:  Facebook

Senior Lucy Walters shared, "After getting the feel of ICCA, we wanted to be strong into Saturday’s competition at Mount Vernon. We worked hard for weeks, and it showed. Since Saturday was only our fourth time competing as a team, every emotion was felt as we anxiously waited to step onto the mat again. We were nervous, we were sweaty, but we were ready and, as our music started, the nervousness became excitement. The final time we yelled 'Hornets' in the routine, I turned around with tears running down my face embraced in a giant hug. Personally, I left the floor with pride in what my team just accomplished after knowing how much work we all have put into the routine. It is not easy to compete. It has been months in the making with our fair share of blood, sweat, and tears, but we did it and we all felt it. As we sat in the bleachers hand in hand waiting for awards to be announced, I hoped we would place. Even if we had not, that day had been the best experience of my high school career. However, 'Nashville' blared over the speakers and screams filled the gym. It has been some time since the Nashville has competed at IHSA and I am proud to say my team has just broken that streak."

Hornettes Finish Third in Highland Tourney

The NCHS Hornettes, now ranked #4 in Class 2A, beat #3 ranked Mater Dei to capture the third place trophy in the Highland Tournament on Saturday, 1/20/24.  The game was a "nailbiter" with a final score of 40 - 39.  Emma Behrmann led the team with 13 points and four rebounds.  Summer Brinkmann followed with nine points and seven rebounds while Samantha Brinkmann had seven points and four rebounds.  Also contributing to the score was Abby Knepp with six, Avery Reeder with three, and Belle Schmale and Claire Stiegman with one each.

Emma Behrmann was named to the first team all-tournament team.

NCHS Hornette Basketball Team Is On FIRE

The Hornettes are a dominant and fun team to watch this year.  Under the new direction of Coach Dempsey Witte, the Hornettes are 20 - 2 after the 1/15/24 win against O'Fallon, the defending Class 4A State Champions, in the 37th Highland Tournament.  The Hornettes defeated O'Fallon 63 - 56 in the quarterfinal round of the Tournament shocking O'Fallon who had previously beaten Nashville in the Mascoutah Tournament. According to STLToday, Coach Witte, shared said that after that first loss, "these girls battled through it, worked hard in practice and looked in the mirror and saw that they could do some better things."  The Hornettes were the champions in their own NIT in November, and they placed fourth over the holiday break in the Mascoutah Basketball Invitational facing some of their toughest competition of the season.  The Hornettes also have reached a milestone that only nine teams in Illinois can claim:  1,000 team wins.  Hornette basketball began in 1977 - 1978, and the 1,000 wins translates to 21 wins per season for 47 seasons according to the Southern Illinoisan.  Coach Dempsey Witte said that "winning 1,000 games is quite an accomplishment.  That's an awful lot of great athletes and coaches over the years."  Nashville looks to improve their skills and head into the remainder of the season notching more wins straight into the postseason.  Sophomore Emma Behrmann, who scored a career-high 29 points against O'Fallon shared with STLToday, "I'd like to think we're getting ready to play our best basketball."  Nashville is ranked 6th in the state according to the Carlyle Union Banner.
