From a stunning 79 - 77 victorious battle over Webber at home on Friday, 2/20/26 to a come from behind 59 - 44 domination over Pinckneyville in Pinckneyville's own Duster Thomas Gymnasium a full week later, the Hornets are putting in the work...generating bucket after bucket while strongly defending whatever or whoever is put in front of them.

Hornette Season Ends At Sectional
In what can only be described as a heartbreaking moment, the Hornettes fell to the Central Cougars in the Sectional Championship game at Chester on Thursday, 2/26/26. The final score was Central 58 - Nashville 48. Ranked #1 in Class 2A for the better part of the 2025 - 2026 season, the Hornettes were just two games shy of heading back to IHSA State this week. They end the season with an impressive 31 - 3 record, and though it is tremendously unfortunate not to be traveling to Bloomington for a repeat opportunity at the State Championship, these young ladies should be proud of their efforts on and off the court. They are intense competitors...athletic and intelligent. They are tremendous teammates...aware and supportive. They are superior role models...inclusive and guiding.
Swim meets in an aquatics center simply don't generate the fans that winter basketball games on the court do. However, that doesn't stop freshman Sawyer Schmale from putting in the work all week long to be a strong competitor. At the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center in Edwardsville on Saturday, 2/21/26, Sawyer found success when he medaled in both of his individual events at the IHSA Swimming Sectional. Sawyer earned 6th in the 200 freestyle dropping 2 seconds and 6th in the 500 freestyle cutting 1.73 seconds. With these times, Sawyer now holds NCHS school records and is the first male NCHS swimmer to medal at Sectionals.
Sawyer and his teammates from surrounding schools are coached by Laura Schubert.

Senior Maliah Riechmann reflected on her time as a Stinger and this incredible season. "Some memories that stand out most to me was when I was a freshman and we went to UDA camp. It was definitely an experience and we still talk about it today. However one of the best memories was going to IHSA state for the very first time. It took a lot of work to get there and just being able to go there is such a blessing. Some challenges that I faced was breaking my big toe last summer. I had to get surgery and get two pins in my toe. This was very difficult for me because I couldn’t walk for a month and couldn’t drive for two. So the first half of the school year I had to sit out. However, once I got cleared I tried my hardest to get back to where I was. I still had some pain and problems but I worked through it. One problem was that I wasn’t able to wear a jazz shoe because it had no support so I had to wear one tennis shoe and one jazz shoe. One of the best memories that I will remember was from this year when we danced at IDTA state and we finished our hiphop and I realized it was my last time ever dancing competitively and me and Adi just hugged each other and cried because we have put so much time into dancing and we started dancing together when we where about 3 years old and now where ending it at 17."
The team supported Senior Adi Wilson as she performed her solo the night before (above).
Adi Wilson shared her thoughts about being a Stinger, and the endurance of this team. "There are several memories that stand out to me while being a Stinger. For one, every single state appearance! We were lucky enough to make it to IDTA State all four years, and IHSA State these past two years. With every year, our team has improved tremendously. My sophomore year we placed 3rd in A Hip Hop, and this year we are State Champions in A Hip Hop and Runners Up in A Jazz!!! Not only have the performances stood out to me, but the bonds created from sharing these experiences with the girls on my team. I would like to also recognize all of the hard, long days of practice as something very important to reflect on. I am so proud of everyone for putting in the work not only as a team, but individually. Our hard work has paid off! In all, I would like to thank our coaches, families, and the NCHS community for the constant support that has been provided through my years of being a Stinger!"
Congratulations, Stingers and Coaches! Thank you for a season to remember.
