Message from the President

Last week, the Curriculum Chronicle was released and included links to articles from the American Educator from 2014 regarding CKLA and included AFT logo. The use of the AFT Logo without permission gives the impression that AFT supports the Nashua School District’s use of Amplify CKLA’s curriculum. Further, the citation to 3 articles from the American Educator, Summer 2014 edition about CKLA Preschool curriculum is misleading to the extent that these articles say nothing about the CKLA curriculum being used in Nashua.

The AFT, AFT New Hampshire, and the Nashua Teachers’ Union don’t shy away from identifying strategies and practices that are or are not supported by the science of reading knowledge base. But we do not provide blanket endorsements of particular curricula as a general rule.

Furthermore, the NTU encourages robust pilots of new curriculum materials by teachers and encourages teachers having a seat at the table when discussing what is best for the students of our district. When all is said and done, CKLA may be the right program for the students of Nashua. We strongly encourage the Nashua School District to have a rigorous pilot process that includes teacher voice and ends with a program that is the best fit for our students.

8th Annual Toys for Tots Drive

This year marks the 8th Annual Toys for Tots Drive sponsored by the Nashua Teachers' Union.  The blue bins will return for drop off at your school/office. We will continue to have a drop off for new, unwrapped toys at the Union Office.  We will continue to accept monetary donations.  We will take all donations and purchase toys to donate to our drive or donate it directly to the local campaign here in Hillsborough County.  Blue bins will appear in your schools the week of November 1st and we collect items through Thursday, December 1st.

We will also accept donations by check or Venmo. Make checks payable to the Nashua Teachers' Union and send to:

Know Your Contract

Work Day

Each unit has a specific work day, usually set by your school principal. The work day may vary by your position, number of hours you were hired to work, and which school you work. You are expected to be working during those work hours unless you are on FMLA leave, using some sort of time off, or it's not a work day for you. Please be mindful of what you're posting on social media or where you're going during school hours.  You are entitled to use your personal/sick time, etc. as outlined in your respective contract. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Union Office.

Vacancies on the Board of Directors

The following positions are vacant on the Board of Directors. Vacancies are either a one or two year term (see date next to each position for when the term expires). The Board of Directors meetings monthly to discuss Union related issues, actions, and other business as needed. Board members also help disseminate information from the Union Office, meet with administration for questions about contracts, and assist members with questions, concerns and when meeting with administration. Members of the Board Directors are supported by the Grievance Chairs and the Executive Board. If you have any questions, or are interested in one of the vacant positions, please contact Adam (president@nashuatu.org).

Holiday Shopping

Well, about 1/3 of you are like me, and started. Are the rest of you waiting for December 24th? 😀

Just for Fun

Remember last week when I told you I started Christmas shopping because I have four children? Well, those rascals have given me a thought for this week's Just for Fun. Of course, we have to do pumpkins for Halloween. Madelyn wants to paint her pumpkin, Quinten wants to carve his pumpkin, and the other two look at me like I'm crazy when I ask them about pumpkins. Lucky me!
