7th Grade Script

Good evening! My name is _Allison___, and I play_________ in our band. Thank you for coming to our concert tonight and thank you for your patience while we modified the stage set up. Let’s please give another round of applause to the 6th grade band and the Jazz Band for doing such a great job!

My name is _Alina___, and I play_________ in our band. The Seventh Grade Band will be performing three songs, starting with March Zuma by John O’Reilly. This march is just a little slower than a lot of other marches, and it is in a minor key. This semester, we have been working on a lot of more advanced rhythm concepts and skills, and this piece is not only a fun challenge to play, but it also addresses several of our learning targets for the curriculum.

My name is __________, and I play_________ in our band. Next, we will play All Ye Young Sailors by Pierre LaPlante, which is an arrangement of the old sea chanty called “Blow the Man Down”. This rollicking song is fun to play and features every section of the band at one time or another.

**Mr. Coon will make a special announcement before the Defying Gravity script is read.

My name is __________, and I play_________ in our band. Defying Gravity by Stephen Schwartz. This music is from the blockbuster Broadway musical “Wicked”, which is returning to The Ohio Theater later in May. Mr. Coon said that this song is a great fit for our band because we didn’t let our beginner band year get us down, and now we are flying higher than anyone ever expected! On a side note, we are proud to tell you that former New Albany Band member David White is now on tour with the West Coast tour of “Wicked”!

After we finish playing Defying Gravity, we will take a few minutes to adjust the stage for the 8th grade band. Thank you in advance for your patience.

8th Grade Band

My name is _Gabe_, and I play_Clarinet____ in our band. Let’s give the 7th grade band another big round of applause for their performance! Shadow Cove March is A Pirate’s Adventure by composer Randall Standridge, who brought Santa the Barbarian to our December concerts. This may be the most advanced piece of the year for us, but it’s so much fun to play that it almost doesn’t seem like work. If you listen carefully, you will probably hear references to a famous Sea Chanty in the song.

My name is _Janelle_, and I play__flute___ in our band. Music from West Side Story is a medley of Leonard Berstein’s songs from the enduring musical. Songs included in this medley are the Prologue, Maria, Tonight, One Hand, One Heart, America, Somewhere. Many of these melodies continue to be known to generations of music lovers.

My name is __Ella___, and I play flute in our band. West Side Story is Bernstein’s 1957 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, and is a musical that explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, which are two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds in New York City. The show is also known for amazing music and groundbreaking choreography. It has enjoyed continued popularity in revivals, a 1961 movie, and a re-make of the movie that you should watch on Disney+ if you haven’t seen it yet!

**Mr. Coon will make a special announcement before the next part of the script is read.

My name is __Katie___, and I play__Clarinet___ in our band. Shackelford Banks, A Tale of Wild Mustangs by Jay Bocook draws its inspiration from the legendary mustangs that survived old time shipwrecks or perhaps were abandoned by early settlers, and now live in wilderness areas in the Outer Banks of the Southeastern United States. This tuneful music celebrates these hardy souls who have withstood storm and tempest, and remain free to this day.

Mr. Coon will make a brief announcement thanking the audience and congratulating the Bands.
