Program Notes

Maroon Jazz Band

In the Doghouse, by Eric Morales: This phenomenal work fuses boogie-woogie and shuffle into a chart with a unique style and attitude. The opening piano groove grabs the listener and sets the pace for the entire work. Cool stop time ensemble sections at the end of the chart!

Yesterday, by John Lennon & Paul McCartney, arr. Rick Stitzel: Yesterday is a melancholy ballad about the break-up of a relationship. The singer nostalgically laments for yesterday when he and his love were together, before she left because of something he said. McCartney is the only member of the Beatles to appear on the track. One of the all-time great songs from the Beatles, Yesterday truly has become a modern day standard!

Cold Duck Time, by Eddie Harris, arr. Mark Taylor: Cold Duck Time is a rock-influenced jazz standard written by Eddie Harris.  It first appeared on the album Swiss Movement by Les McCann and Eddie Harris. The first recording of this tune wasn’t well-rehearsed, and you can definitely hear that the band is learning this tune while on stage.  Swiss Movement is a live album that was recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1969. Gold Jazz Band

Sir Duke, by Stevie Wonder, Arr. Michael Philip Mossman: Stevie Wonder wrote this song as a tribute to music, specifically to Duke Ellington, who had passed away in 1974. Also name checked are great Jazz artists Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Glenn Miller. The song is a passionate, heartfelt tribute.

Floral Fury, by Kristopher Maddigan, arr. John Herberman: Cuphead is a classic action game primarily focused on boss battles. Inspired by the cartoons and music style of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are carefully created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional cel animation (hand drawn & hand inked), watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings. This song from the soundtrack of the game focuses on the final boss battle in act one, called “Floral Fury”, where the player fights against the carnivorous plant named Cagney Carnation. Also, this original track is the only track to deviate from the ‘30s jazz style as instead is more of a samba-like style.    link for info: Cuphead IMDb

Floral Fury is a level on Inkwell Isle One, where the fight with Cagney Carnation takes place. It is represented on the map by a flower patch. While this level is normally unlocked after completing Threatenin' Zeppelin, it is possible to access it earlier by taking a shortcut below the bridge on the left of Ruse of an Ooze. Birdland, by Josef Zawinul, arr. Larry Kerchner: Birdland is a jazz club started in New York City on December 15, 1949. The original Birdland, which was located at 1678 Broadway, just north of West 52nd Street in Manhattan, was closed in 1965 due to increased rents, but it re-opened for one night in 1979. A revival began in 1986 with the opening of the second nightclub by the same name that is now located in Manhattan's Theater District, not far from the original nightclub's location. The current location is in the same building as the previous headquarters of The New York Observer. Irving Levy, Morris Levy, and Oscar Goodstein – along with six other partners – purchased the venue in 1949 from Joseph "Joe the Wop" Catalano. They adopted the name "Birdland" to capitalize on the profile of Charlie "Yardbird" Parker. Weather Report released their most commercially successful hit entitled "Birdland" on the album Heavy Weather in 1977. The Manhattan Transfer recorded a cover version of the same song in 1979, with vocalese lyrics describing the club at its peak. (Credit: Wikipedia)

Concert Band

Fanfare for the Third Planet, by Richard Saucedo: A dedication to our own planet Earth, this impressive piece features a rhythmic vitality throughout, along with fresh harmonies and skilled orchestral devices. Amid the powerful fanfare-like phrases, a brief calm section is created using the woodwinds and a unique layering effect before building to the dynamic ending.

Falling Leaves, by John Fannin: Inspired by the colors of fall, this full sounding, lyrical ballad is perfect to begin exploring rubato, tenuto, and vibrato. The simple melody is initially stated by the first flute, and a piano part really adds color and beauty to the arrangement. Calm, yet powerful, Falling Leaves is perfectly selected for a springtime concert!

Fantasy on a Russian Air (Beethoven Op. 107), by Jonnie Vinson: Based on a familiar folk tune, Johnnie Vinson has created an appealling set of variations with an occasional nod to Beethoven, who used the same melody in his Theme and Variations for flute and piano (Op. 107, No. 7). With each variation featuring a different section of the band, this work utilizes a mixture of contrasting meters and styles.

Wind Ensemble

West Side Story Medley, by Leonard Bernstein, arr. Jay Bocook: Music from West Side Story is a medley of Leonard Berstein’s songs from the enduring musical. Songs included in this medley are the Maria, Tonight, One Hand, One Heart, Cool and Somewhere. Many of these melodies continue to be known to generations of music lovers. Come back tomorrow to hear the 8th grade band perform their medley of West Side Story that also includes the Prologue and America!

Cry of the Last Unicorn, by Rossano Galante: Intensely descriptive from the very first note, this work portrays a fateful encounter of hunters tracking the "last unicorn." The music is at times poignant and other times dramatic and exciting as the chase is depicted. Sweeping themes and rich scoring help to make this a memorable work for the symphonic stage.

Wheels, by David Bobrowitz: Take a spin with this musical picture that captures the incessant motion and ever-moving character of the wheel. It is a vibrant, pulsating portrayal of an invention that changed mankind forever. Intended to celebrate the profound impact the wheel has had on humanity, from the simple enjoyment of a hula hoop to essential uses in transportation and manufacturing, this invigorating work [is] an exciting change-of-pace!
