Fine motor skills involve the smaller muscles located in for hand, fingers and wrist that allow children to write, cut, hold small items, button/zip clothing, turning pages, eating, playing with toys, and using computer keyboards. They start to develop this musculature in the womb, when your baby starts moving their extremities. Before a child can fully develop the smaller muscles in the distal (wrist, hand, and fingers) part of their arm they have to strengthen the proximal (abdomen, chest, shoulders, upper arm and forearm). A lot of times before we even begin to work on some of the smaller muscles we will focus on core strengthening and weight bearing exercises.
