Occupational Therapy

What is Occupational Therapy:

  • What is Occupational Therapy (OT) and what does it mean for my child. Occupational Therapy is a related service provided to students whose academic achievement is inhibited by delays in the development of fine motor, visual motor, visual perceptual skills, sensory processing and/or daily life skills. A school-based occupational therapy program may consist of sensory strategies, strengthening, hand development skills, daily life skills, writing, cutting and copying activities which promote development in the above mentioned areas.
  • Occupational therapy services can be provided through consultation or direct services. Sessions can take place within the classroom or therapy room, and either individually or in groups. Services are determined based on assessments and observations. Typically, students who receive services have an Individualized Education Plan. These services require a prescription from a child’s doctor. Other students can receive building level occupational therapy services if it is determined that they need a little support to overcome hurdles within the classroom.
