Students chose a motif that they thought was prevalent and valuable within poetry. Through their own research, they selected famous poems which shared this motif, analyzed how the motif functioned within these poems, and wrote original poems that focused on their chosen motif.

Students also learned about the Romantic and Gothic Poets. We worked on highlighting poetic devices within these poems through emphasis on what is left out when we paraphrase in our own words. Students were fascinated with Poe's philosophy of the duality of man and Faulkner's insistence that time is fluid.

Change-Makers
Students read I am Malala and filled out a guided note sheet as they read. I encouraged them to attempt to make connections with Malala and her goals, even if we may lead very different lives in many ways.
Modernism
Students analyzed the literary techniques found within The Great Gatsby and how they supported the central idea of The American Dream. We discussed the modernist tropes of alienation and the historical circumstances that influenced a new, abstract, psychologically-focused style of writing.
