Pirate Terms so ye know what we're sayin'!

Ahoy- Used to hail a ship, a boat or a person, or to attract attention.

Avast!- Stop; cease.

Aye - Yes, definitely.

Aye Aye - Of course, I’ll do that now.

Belay- Stop; enough.

Bilge rat - A rat that lives in the dirtiest, smelliest and lowest part of a ship (an insult).

Black heart- A descriptor for someone's cruelty or spirited meanness.

Brigand- One who lives by plunder usually as a member of a band of thieves.

Booty- Riches that have usually been stolen.

Cutthroat- A murderer or other violent criminal.

Davy Jones’ Locker - The bottom of the ocean.

Fair Winds - Good luck!

Keel Haul- Punish by dragging through the water under the keel of a ship, either across the width or from bow to stern.

Loot - Gold and riches, usually stolen.

Pillage - To rob.

Plunder- To steal.

Port - The left side of the ship. Could also refer to a place where you dock your ship.

Pressgang - To force somebody to become a member of a ship’s crew.

Scallywag- A person who behaves badly, but in an amusingly mischievous rather than harmful way.

Scoundrel- A dishonest or unscrupulous person; a rogue.

Scurvy dog- Term used for insubordinates.

Sea legs - What you have when you’re used to the sway of boat on the ocean.

Starboard - The right side of the ship.

Weigh anchor - To lift the anchor and be ready to sail.

Wench- A girl or young woman.

Yarr!- To growl or snarl as a dog.
