Activities

Calendimagio Challenge:

The theme for this year’s event is Calendimagio, which is an Italian event that celebrates the rivalry between the blue and the red parts of the city with friendly competitions. Everyone will be assigned a side at gate and then can compete in any of the competitions throughout the day. If you or your team win one of the competitions not only will you win a small prize but your team (red or blue) will earn points. The side that collects the most points throughout the day will be declared the winner at evening court! Point will be awarded for all of the championships, caber toss, quizzes, a cookie competition and more. There will be competitions for men, women, teams, and kids!

Cookie Competition

Bring at least two dozen of your best homemade cookies to enter this competition! Their Excellencies will choose a winner who will earn their team a point and then we will share the extra cookies with the populace in the afternoon. See the schedule for the drop off time or find Lady Uliana in the morning to drop off your entry. Please include an index card with your name, name of the cookie, and a list of ingredients.

Caber Toss

Caber Toss is traditional Beltane celtic game where you competed to see who can toss a large pole the best! While a traditional caber is over 175 lbs, we have much smaller ones suitable for men’s, women’s and children’s competitions.

Tug of War

Compete in a traditional blue vs. red tug of war! Gather as many of your teammates as you can and meet at the time on the schedule. Open to adults and youth.

Spang Decorating

Either make and decorate your Spang at home before the event or come and decorate one onsite with Baroness Aeysha. There is no specific theme this year, so use your creativity! Ideas could come from the event theme, spring or anything else you can dream up. One or more winner will be chosen by Their Excellencies and will earn a point for their group.

Quiz/Trivia

Be the first person to correctly answer all the questions on this quiz, and earn a point for your team. If no one gets them all right, the point will go to whoever gets the highest score. There will be separate youth and adult quizzes and winners. The questions can cover any part of the SCA, so come prepared. No googling allowed!

Sled Race

In the style of the races held in Assisi, competed in this timed race to see who can pull their team mate on a sled through the course the fastest. The fastest time wins the point!

Water Balloon Toss

Pair up with someone with your team’s color and see who can toss a water balloon the farthest without getting wet! There will be both adult and youth competitions, with a point available for each.

Frog Hunt

Hunt for the Beltane Frogs all over site. The team that gathers the most by a predetermined time wins the point. Come to morning court to figure out who to bring all the frogs to! Youth only please.

Other Fun Activities:

These are not competitions, just lots of fun!

May Queen (17 and over):

The May Queen is the personification of May Day Celebrations! She is adorned with flowers, begins the activities, gets to sit with Their Majesties and Their Excellencies during court, and is treated like a Queen all day!. Sign up at gate to be entered into a drawing to see who will be crowned May Queen this year.

Spang Princess (16 and under please):

Just like the May Queen, but for children 16 and under!

Spang Hewing:

At Beltane, spangs are used in various rituals welcoming spring and the giddy silliness associated with spring fever. In one such ritual, “spang hewing”, spangs dip themselves into refreshing water and leap onto sticks to await a friendly populace member who will assist this immobile frog by flinging it through the air and (hopefully) into a hula hoop. Don’t worry, they are not real frogs, but they are still wet and slimy.

May Pole:

Come and dance around the May Pole in this fun ceremonial folk dance performed around a tall pole hung with ribbons that are woven into complex patterns by the dancers.

Middle Eastern Dance Class:

Whether you are brushing up on your technique or making a fresh start, this structured and easy to follow class is perfect for students to get to know the basics of belly dance. Take what you learn and use it at your next hafla! This class with be taught by Cailleach Dhe inghean Ui Chaerbhaill
