Positive Vector--a run for mental health.
On a Wisconsin winter day in December of 2021, two runners set out on foot from Bloomer to their destination of Eau Claire. They met a third runner in Chippewa Falls and together, they ran. Along the way, they had the support of three cyclists and a station wagon. This Wisconsin winter running event was planned by a group of friends to honor a fellow University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire alum, Corey James Hilber. Corey died by suicide in December of 2012. Through sharing the cause, the group raised $3,383 and donated the funds to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Chippewa Valley. The donation helped enable the local nonprofit to hire their first staff, a part time executive director.
In 2022, the planning committee expanded and the event was officially named Positive Vector. With a focus on getting more people involved for the event, a dozen runners, and as many volunteers, made their way from Mondovi to Rock Creek to Eau Claire in a fresh blanket of Wisconsin snow. Between the direct involvement of thirty people, and the partnership of eight local businesses, the inaugural Positive Vector raised $17,422 for NAMI Chippewa Valley in December 2022.
The name, Positive Vector, is a nod to Corey’s enthusiasm for all things math. A vector is a combination of magnitude and direction. The goal of the annual running event is to empower those doing great work in mental health while providing an optimistic and positive direction for our community.
In 2023, Positive Vector was made an official event of NAMI Chippewa Valley. On Saturday, December 16th, runners began the full marathon at Menomonie Market in Menomonie, and the half marathon at the Spring Brook Town Hall; both finishing at Menomonie Market in downtown Eau Claire. During an unseasonably warm winter day, the rain clouds parted and runners embarked on a dreary, yet memorable journey for mental health. Positive Vector raised $13,072 for NAMI Chippewa Valley in 2023 and $17,035 in 2024!
Positive Vector is a unique running event in which runners take on the Wisconsin winter. This endeavor is made possible by the support of community volunteers that work both behind the scenes and along the route. Even people who are unable to run or volunteer at the event can be involved in helping us reach the goal through our peer-to-peer fundraising campaign. Positive Vector's goal for 2025 is to raise $15,000 for NAMI Chippewa Valley. This will be accomplished by runners and volunteers reaching out to share the message of Positive Vector.
