COURSE OVERVIEW
This course provides a broad introduction to practical woodworking. It is largely workshop based but does combine elements of theory and woodworking techniques to develop a strong knowledge of woodworking. The course is led by developing safe working practices including personal safety, machine safety and workshop safety. Pupils develop skills in reading drawings and diagrams, measuring and marking out, cutting, shaping and finishing materials.

This course is offered at S3, National 4 and National 5 level.
You will develop skills, knowledge and understanding in the use of woodworking tools and in making woodworking joints and assemblies commonly used in flat-frame joinery, involving complex features. You will also develop the ability to read and use drawings and diagrams in various woodwork projects.
Here you will develop skills, knowledge and understanding in the use of woodworking tools and in making woodworking joints and assemblies commonly used in carcase construction, involving complex features. This may include working with manufactured board or with frames and panels.
Through the course you will have the opportunity to use a range of machines. Here you will develop skills, knowledge and understanding in using machine and power tools including the wood turning lathe, pillar drills and mortise machine. You will also develop skills in a variety of woodworking surface preparations and finishing techniques.
ASSESSMENT
National 5 Practical Woodworking
Exam
1 hour - 60 marks (scaled mark 30 - 30%) - externally assessed
Practical Assignment Task
70 marks (70%) - internally assessed
Passing the course equates to one level 5 qualification (24 SCQF credit points)
PRACTICAL PROJECTS
Here are some of the projects you will work on in Practical Woodworking.
The final project will allow you to showcase all of the skills you have gained over the course. You will have to show skills in flat frame and carcase construction, machining, preparing and applying a finish, independence of working and safety in the workshop.

Develop your knowledge of drilling different types of and assembling a frame that is square.
A traditional project that develops your skills in drilling and housing joints. Don't fancy making this? Use your imagination to turn it into something else.
A nice wee project that allows you to develop cutting skills and work on applying a high quality finish.
