Second grade reading strategies are taught through the ReadyGen Reading Program. Module A of the first unit, Understanding Communities, dives deeper into story elements such as character, setting and plot. Students identify and describe character traits, character point of view, and how characters respond to relationships and events within the story. In addition, students will use words and illustrations to describe details and understand the setting and plot of fiction texts and poems. Finally, students will compare the problems and solutions of two stories and describe how stories are structured. Vocabulary study will be emphasized throughout the unit.
Writing strategies closely relate to what is being learned in reading class. Students will focus on developing story elements such as character, setting, problem and solution to write simple stories. Beginning of the year language skills will focus on reviewing nouns, identifying and capitalizing proper nouns, forming and using plural nouns, and identifying collective nouns. Students will also review verbs and pronouns and identify and use irregular verbs. In addition, sentence structure, length and variety will be addressed throughout the year.
Math content and strategies are taught through the Investigations math program. Our first unit, Coins, Number Strings, and Story Problems, is one of several units addressing the Number and Operations in Base Ten domain within Ohio's Math Learning Standards.
This unit focuses on adding and subtracting single-digit numbers in any order; counting by groups, particularly groups of tens and ones, which lays the foundation for students’ work with place value and the base-10 number system; and developing and refining strategies for solving a variety of addition and subtraction problems. It also introduces the mathematical tools, processes, and ways of working that will be the foundation of math class. As part of this work, students are introduced to several year-long classroom routines that offer regular practice with composing and decomposing numbers, developing visual images of quantities, addition and subtraction facts, telling time, and counting, collecting, and analyzing data.
Our first IB unit is How We Organize Ourselves.
Central Idea: An inquiry into the structure and function of organization
In this unit, we will explore:
Students will learn what it means to be a part of a community and how their specific roles contribute to each community in which they are a part. We will discuss how to organize our time and materials to help us succeed. We will learn about and practice using the Action Cycle to solve problem. In addition, students will identify their "Super Power" strengths and potential strengths. We will spend a lot of time talking about Growth Mindset and The Power of Yet. Plans will be made to reach short term and long term goals using our strengths to help us.
Students will be developing and using technology skills throughout the year in all classroom subjects. We will be using the Google Suite for Education apps. We will begin to use Google Classroom to announce, communicate and share important ideas, resources and classroom assignments within our community. Students will learn to publish documents using Google Docs, create presentations using Google Slides, and complete surveys and quizzes on Google Forms. In addition, students will be using the Typing.com website to practice keyboarding skills. Additional websites such as MobyMax, Epic, Prodigy, Xtra Math, Read Theory and Accelerated Reader will also be used to introduce and practice classroom skills.
