Conclusion

Subservience, conformity and social policing occurs throughout different social institutions. This includes culture, religion, and even places of governance, with each institution having its own set of norms and standards that are constantly reinforced. In the presentation, we have demonstrated how subservience, conformity and social policing occurs by paying close attention to these social institutions, and highlighting the effects this has on the individuals and societal structures at large. Society’s standards of beauty are constantly changing with time and encourage individuals to regulate their body weight, appearance, expression, to fit what is deemed as desirable and “normal”. We illustrated this by including instances such as diet culture, cross-cultural social policing and religious contexts. General review of the problems that these policies propose are how we as residents see it and the understanding of it. However, it is noteworthy how the phenomenon of social policing could be as harmful itself in public recognition. It is our responsibility to transform the relationship of social subversion and responsive to social impact.
