Machine Learning-Based Smart Queue Management System to Improve Service Delivery in South Africa
Why Public Service Systems?
I am a BSc Computer Science Honours candidate at the University of the Western Cape, with a background in Physical Sciences. My research sits at the intersection of machine learning fused with public service delivery, exploring how intelligent systems can solve real, everyday problems faced by South African citizens.
My Honours research focuses on developing a Smart Queue Management System for high-traffic public service centres such as the Department of Home Affairs and SASSA. The system integrates an online booking platform with machine learning models, including K-Nearest Neighbours, Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting, to predict waiting times and improve operational efficiency. This work is driven by a commitment to fairness, accessibility, and data ethics, particularly in contexts where algorithmic bias can have real consequences for vulnerable communities.
