School of Public Health, University of the Western Cape

The School of Public Health has developed an extensive postgraduate, research and professional-training footprint. It offers doctoral, master's and postgraduate diploma programmes in public health, with programmes designed to serve working professionals in South Africa, across Africa and throughout the Global South. The School also hosts two South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) chairs and has served as a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Human Resources for Health Development since 2004.

Its history of continuing education is similarly substantial. UWC notes that its former Summer and Winter School programmes reached more than 12,000 practitioners from South Africa and other African countries, making the School a significant platform for professional and knowledge exchange in the public-health field.

For the Geo-Energy Resources Workshop, this institutional character reinforces the workshop's emphasis on knowledge exchange. The event is positioned not simply as a series of technical presentations, but as a forum in which different sectors can interrogate how geological and energy resources can contribute to sustainable development while recognising environmental and societal considerations.

A venue connected to UWC's tradition of public engagement

The School's location within UWC is also significant. The University has a long-established tradition of linking scholarship with social transformation and public engagement. The School itself describes its work in terms of research, informed communities, equity, social justice and human dignity.

This ethos complements the Geo-Energy Resources Workshop's intended role as a platform connecting academia, industry, government and emerging professionals.

The workshop's location at UWC consequently places geo-energy discussions within an institution whose academic culture encourages engagement with real-world challenges. This is particularly relevant to a field such as geo-energy, where technically viable resources must ultimately be considered within wider questions of environmental stewardship, regulation, economic development, community interests and long-term sustainability.

The School of Public Health is a substantial academic building rather than a conventional commercial conference venue. Its spaces are used routinely for teaching, meetings, research activities and institutional events. In April 2026, for example, the School hosted a walk-about by UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Balfour, during which the University leadership visited teaching, meeting and event spaces across the building, including the School's seminar rooms.

This existing event infrastructure is valuable for the Geo-Energy Resources Workshop because the workshop requires an environment capable of supporting presentations, discussion, networking and interaction between participants rather than simply accommodating an audience.
