In March 2018, the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences embarked on a strategic planning exercise. This culminated in the development of a Vision, Mission, and Strategic Goal Areas.
The EMS Strategic Goal Area 2, in respect of Research and Innovation, mandates the Faculty to :
"Increase cutting-edge EMS research outputs which advances societal transformation and development"
Following on the above several strategic actions have been identified, including inter-alia
Identify Niche areas for research
Strengthen our Post-grad supervision capacity and capability
Develop Partnerships with internal and external parties to leverage research opportunities and funding
Investigate Incentives and support structures to improve research outputs
Develop and implement a workload model that accounts for R&I and post-graduate activity
Raise the profile of research
The development of the EMS Research Niche Areas, are pursuant to strategic actions 1, 3 and 6.
In order to build critical mass and make effective use of limited resources, it is important for the Faculty to have clear areas of research focus
The choice of RNAs must make the strongest contribution to strategic imperatives
RNAs must have clearly demarcated foci which are supportive of a multi-disciplinary approach to Research and Innovation, and Mode 2 knowledge production.
RNAs will evolve over time as strategic imperatives shift and as our strengths change.
RNAs will have sufficient flexibility , and shall be subject to periodic reviews to assess relevance to EMS’ growth trajectory, national imperatives, and orientation to Mode 2 research.

promote an environment without silos that actively supports multi and trans-disciplinary approaches and research
