Ms. Mitchell is in her tenth year of teaching and her seventh in Sweeny. She conducts the High School Band and the junior high Concert Band and assists with the Symphonic Band. Additionally, she teaches the beginner trumpet, horn, low brass, and percussion classes.
Outside of the band hall, Ms. Mitchell performs on her French horn with the Brazosport Symphony Orchestra as well as serving on the Board of Directors as Parliamentarian. She is also an life member of Tau Beta Sigma, National Band Sorority. Additionally, she is actively involved with the Tau Beta Sigma Alumni Association and the Southwest District Alumni Association where she served two years as Chairperson.
Ms. Mitchell graduated in 2014 from Sam Houston State University with her Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental Music where she served as a Visual Technician and as a Student Assistant in the Bearkat Marching Band. Prior to teaching in Sweeny, she was the assistant band director at Tennyson Middle School in Waco ISD.
In her free time, she enjoys reading, playing video games with her husband, and cuddling with her chiweenie, Remus, and dachshund, Barry.
Mr. Jacob Cantu is in his first year of teaching, he is the head of Sweeny Junior High Band and the Assistant to the Director of Bands at the High School. Mr. Cantu comes from Harlingen, Texas where he attended Harlingen High School. Throughout his time Mr. Cantu placed 3rd overall in the State of Texas on Jazz Baritone Saxophone, was the selected recording for Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois, participated in the State Marching Festivals held in the Alamo Dome, along with being Area Champs back to back in 2010 & 2013.
After graduating High School, Mr. Cantu then pursued his Bachelors Degree in Music in Education from Texas A&M Kingsville. Throughout his time there he was the first elected president of the South Texas Saxophone Association and held this position for a two year term, performed in the Northern American Saxophone Alliance Convention in Fayetteville, Arkansas, guest for the TAMUK Wind Symphony on Bass Saxophone, performed in Opera Workshop along with several Musical Theatre performances, and studied abroad for 3 weeks in Vienna, Austria.
