Google Classroom

GETTING STARTED

All K-6 students have Google accounts within the St. Peter's domain. Your child's Google account username has the format of lastname.firstnamegradyear@myspartans.org. As an example, Joe Smith, who will graduate in 2030, would have a Google account username of smith.joe2030@myspartans.org. (no period at the end). Passwords are unique to each student. Every student will be issued username and password information by their homeroom teacher. If there is a problem accessing the account, please contact either Sam Chamberlin at chamberlin.sam@myspartans.org, or Susan James at james.susan@myspartans.org. PLEASE NOTE THAT PASSWORDS ARE CASE SENSITIVE. WATCH CAREFULLY FOR UPPER AND LOWER CASE LETTERS.

The video below provides an introduction to Google Classroom. Please watch the entire video, as there are features of Google Classroom that are very helpful to keeping track of assignments.

Google Classroom is intended to be used primarily by students, recognizing that younger students will need assistance. As your child becomes more comfortable using Google Classroom, it is recommended that students regularly check the Google Classroom "To Do" list and calendar independently, Classroom teachers will also reinforce regular use of Google Classroom by students. Parents and guardians can sign up to receive summaries of their child's assignments.

"As a guardian, you can get email summaries about your student’s activity in Classroom. Email summaries do not include grades. For grades, ask your student or contact the teacher.

In email summaries, you can review:

  • Missing work—Work not turned in when the summary was sent.

  • Upcoming work—Work that’s due today and tomorrow (for daily emails) or that’s due in the upcoming week (for weekly emails).

  • Class activities—Announcements, assignments, and questions recently posted by teachers.

If there’s no activity to report or if a teacher turns off email notifications, you might not get an email summary."

MY CHILD'S TEACHER WANTS A PICTURE ATTACHED TO AN ASSIGNMENT...HOW. DO WE DO THAT??

When an assignment is completed on paper, in a workbook, or in a notebook, that assignment will need to be photographed or scanned before it can be turned in. The most common way is simply photographing the paper/page with a camera on a mobile device. It is very important that your student's school ipad be used to photograph or scan so that the image file can be easily saved to his/her Google Drive. Students are unable to receive email messages from outside of the @myspartans.org domain, so parents/guardians are unable to send a photo to their student. Emailing photos to teachers is not an acceptable method of turning in assignments, as your child's teacher cannot attach photos to your child's assignments. Here are suggestions for taking photos so that they can be used by a teacher for grading:

  • Only photograph one page per photo.

  • Photograph the page so that it fills. the picture.

  • Check your photo(s) before attaching them to the assignment. If you cannot read it, neither can the teacher.

  • Consider using the iOS "Notes" app to scan the paper/page. This app allows you to easily crop the image to only include the page. All school ipads have the Notes app.

Once you are ready to attach the photo(s) to the assignment, watch the video below for detailed directions.
