There’s lots of free software out there that you can use to help study. Find free apps on your phone, tablet or search online. If you have a smartphone, use the pre-installed apps or functions such as Calendar, Voice Recorder and Camera - these can help you manage your workload and capture/take notes in your lectures. To help support you, the Learning Support team have also created a website showing you how to use common assistive technologies.

APPS

All of the apps listed below are free to use!

An online proof-reader. It’s more advanced than typical proof-readers found in word processing programs like Word and Pages. The tool finds possible mistakes in spelling, grammar and punctuation and suggests corrections in Emails and Messages, Documents and Projects and Social Media. Available as:

A grammar, punctuation, and spell checker tool which automatically detects and corrects misused words and grammar mistakes. Ginger works with whichever device or platform you prefer. Just install the productivity app on your phone, tablet, or desktop and improve your communication skills immediately.


A text to speech online app with natural voices, convert text to audio and mp3, for personal and commercial use. Available on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android.

 

Allows you to change the look and feel of web pages, increase and decrease font sizes, have text read aloud, use coloured overlays, enhance readability and use a dictionary to aid reading. Spell check forms and try word prediction when writing. It is a simple tool which is available for most popular browsers.


Like having a scanner in your pocket. Like magic, Office Lens trims, enhances and makes pictures of whiteboards and docs readable. Sketch your ideas and snap a picture for later. Don't lose receipts or stray sticky notes again! You can use Office Lens to convert images to PDF, Word and PowerPoint files, and you can even save images to OneNote or OneDrive.

Printed text will be automatically recognised and converted to Word and PDF documents, so you can search for words in images, copy, edit and listen back to them using the immersive reader.

Take notes. Keep a journal. Clip anything from the web. Evernote lets you store and share information quickly and securely.

Snap webpage content, browser extension lets you hold onto anything you find on the web: whole pages, articles, recipes, images, PDFs, and more. Your clips are automatically organised with the notebooks and tags you choose.

Create to-do lists, Evernote can help you manage your everyday tasks and projects, and even remind you so you never miss a deadline.

To do list and task management software. Todoist lets you keep track of everything in one place, so you can get it all done and enjoy more peace of mind along the way. Todoist enables you to keep focussed and on track by allowing you to easily organise and prioritise tasks and projects to ensure you always know exactly what to work on next.

Online diagram and mind map generating software. Professional, open source diagramming. Online with no registration or download. You can download the desktop app if you require working offline.

 

Mind mapping software for iOS and Android that lets you create mind maps to help you organise your thoughts, remember things and generate new ideas.

 

Free access to great learning resources like Mind Maps, Flashcards, Quizzes, Slides and Notes, or use the GoConqr app for social learning and connect and collaborate with friends, classmates and learners in Groups.

Available on PC.

 

On iPhone 6’s or later, iPads and iPod Touch. You can use dictation instead of your keyboard to enter text with many apps and features that use the iOS keyboard. This is great for students who don’t have access to Dragon or other speech to text software. In the right environment and with permission, this could also be utilised as a recording device in class.

 

To use voice dictation on Android, open any app and bring up a keyboard by tapping in a text field you want to type in. Tap the microphone icon at the bottom-left corner of your keyboard and begin speaking and hey presto you should have what you just said out loud on the screen.
