Below you can find an outline of what we will be learning in Science this year. Throughout this course, our students will delve into a variety of captivating topics, from understanding the mysteries of the natural world to discovering the wonders of space and beyond. Unit 1
Nature of Science
Students will learn what science is, the role of scientists, and understand the framework of a scientific investigation.
Unit 2
Properties of Matter
Students will learn how to compare the size, shape, color, texture, and hardness of various materials and accurately measure and compare the temperature, mass, and volume of solids and liquids.
Unit 3
Changes in Water
Students will learn the different changes water goes through when it is heated and cooled
Unit 4
Basic Energy
Students will learn about the basic forms of energy and dive deeper into how heat is produced when objects rub against each other (friction) and how energy can cause motion or create changes.
Unit 5
Light
Students will learn that light is an energy that travels in a straight line until it encounters different materials that cause it to reflect, bend (refract), or absorb (create shadows).
Unit 6
The Sun's Light and Heat
Students will learn that the Sun provides both light and heat energy to Earth and that when the Sun is not present or blocked heat energy is often lost. Also, they will learn that most objects that give off light, often give off heat.
Unit 7
The Sun and The Stars
Students will learn that the appearance of stars is related to their brightness, size, and distance, identify the Sun as a star, and explain why the star appears to be the biggest and brightest star to Earth.
Unit 8
Plant Parts and Responses
Students will learn the main parts of plants and their functions, how plants make their own food, and how they respond to heat, light, and gravity.
Unit 9
Classification of Plants and Animals
Students will learn how to identify and classify plants and animals based on their physical characteristics.
Unit 10
Responses to Changing Seasons
Students will learn how animals and plants respond to changing seasons.
