The Benchmark Universe language arts series is the adopted series for kindergarten through sixth grade. The series was chosen for its standard based approach to teaching the components of language arts. The language arts slides will be part of our core curriculum supplemented with novels, Junior Great Books and short stories. We will be reading, writing, listening and speaking. Our class will begin the year with a literature circle novel, The Westing Game. Students will meet on Fridays to formally discuss our book. Our word study lessons will be built on lessons from Wordly Wise with a week of study followed by an activity and quiz the following week.
Our district adopted program is Imagine Learning's Illustrative Math for Grades K - 6. In sixth grade, students learn more about: numbers, number operations, proportionality: ratios and rates, equivalent expressions, equations and inequalities, geometry, measurement and data.
The scope and sequence of units, activities, and representations are designed to help students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, build fluency with procedures, and solve mathematical problems.
Our science program is Amplify Science. This year, our units focus on Engineering Innovation, Energy in Earth’s Systems, Weather & Climate, Systems of Organisms, Genetics, and Human Impact on Earth’s Systems. Science in sixth-grade transfers into the “middle school” science curriculum and will receive “Next Generation” (NGSS) instruction by learning through compelling real-world examples of science in action.
Our social studies program requires students to engage themselves in the reading and subsequent discussions and learn to take notes on interactive slides and eventually in their spiral notebooks. Topics discussed include: Why study history?, Early Man, Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Hebrews, Ancient India, Ancient China, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome. Critical thinking is emphasized as we analyze why civilizations developed when and where they did, important people and contributions, and what led to the rise and fall of each civilization. Our class will participate in the Walk Through the Ancient World program in March 2026.
Second Step Program is a weekly program focusing on goal setting, thoughts, emotions and decision-making, managing relationships and conflict resolution.
