Rubric: Levels of Classroom Discourse
Assessment for Learning: Use formative assessments, that value a broad form of mathematics, to give ongoing feedback on specific learning goals, encourage students to revise their thinking, and create a learning culture.
Growth Mindset Culture: Give belief messages to students in a meaningful way, consistently recognize and praise effort, ideas, and strategies, and grow students to show self-belief and confidence.
Nature of Mathematics: Implement tasks that are mathematically rich in reasoning opportunities, encourage students to use and share different ideas, visuals, and methods, and put emphasis on depth, creativity, and mathematical beauty.
Challenge & Struggle: Create a classroom culture where mistakes are valued, students are comfortable sharing, students persist longer, and questions are asked that are open and encourage multiple methods, ways of seeing, and thinking.
Connections & Collaboration: Make mathematical connections between ideas, methods, and representations, give students opportunities to collaborate, build off each other's ideas, and talk directly to one another.
