The focus of math in fourth grade is on operations with multi-digit factors and dividends, fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, multiplication of fractions by whole numbers, and analyzing and classifying properties of geometric figures. The resources on this page will support this focus through best first instruction of mathematics, with an emphasis on mindset development, discourse, and students as sensemakers.

*Please note that addition Unit Overviews will not be developed. This Unit Overview was created by a committee of teachers to aid in the transition to the new curriculum with a familiar resource. We highly recommend using Imagine Learning's Planning Map for planning Unit 3 and beyond.
There are many opportunities to check for understanding within each unit. In addition, we also have access to a folder of standards-based mini-assessments if you need more data on a student's progress. The following is a sample of the flow of assessments throughout a unit in Imagine Learning:
Pre-Unit Practice: The practice problems for Section A in each unit, for grades 1 to 5, have several items designated as pre-assessment. These target concepts and skills that are prerequisite to the unit. While many of them are based on earlier grade level material, later units often include problems addressing important work of the grade.
Cool-Downs: Each lesson, in grades 2-5, includes a cool-down (analogous to an exit slip or exit ticket) to assess whether students understood the work of that day’s lesson.
Section Checkpoints: Each section in grades 2-6 has a 3-4 Problem Checkpoint to assess the section learning goals. These can be used for extra practice or can be used to check student understanding before the end of the unit. Each section also has a monitoring sheet that can be used to indicate that students are meeting the section goals.
End of Unit Assessment: Each unit (starting in Kindergarten, Unit 2) includes an end-of-unit written assessment that is intended for students to complete individually to assess what they have learned at the conclusion of the unit.

Family Support Materials for each unit in English & Spanish (Found on the Imagine Learning Website under each unit's Home Connection tab)
ST Math recommends that students in 2nd-6th grades engage in ST Math for 90 minutes per week; 20-30 minute blocks are encouraged to maximize problem solving and reasoning.
It is important that students do the critical thinking, and teachers & parents only use questions when helping stuck students. Try to guide students by only asking the questions on this poster.
Student progress is automatically saved.
