Our program supports over 3000 students with adapted physical education services across kindergarten through age 21. There are 58 itinerant teachers who on average travel between 3 schools clustered in an area of Fairfax County. Each teacher has an average of 35 - 40 students on their caseload. APE teachers are responsible for following the special education policies and procedures by attending individualized education program meetings to design an appropriate educational program with accommodations as needed. This program is data-based and drives an annual goal that the teachers monitor and report quarterly progress. The role is focused on collaboration and co-teaching with the general physical education teacher.
Most of the work is spent collaborating and servicing students. Schools are clustered together to decrease travel time.
Our program is supportive through mentors for teachers entering the program, team leaders, program leaders and the educational specialist. Mentees meet with their mentors on a weekly basis, and this is built into their workday.
