Section 300.39 of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) defines physical education as a special education service.
Adapted physical education is specially designed instruction; adapting as appropriate to the needs of an eligible student, the content, methodology, or delivery of instruction.
It addresses the unique needs of the student that results from the student's disability and ensures access to the general physical education curriculum so that the student can make progress toward grade level curricular standards.
The focus is on development of physical and motor fitness; fundamental motor skills and patterns; and skills in dance and individual and group games and sports (including intramural and lifetime sports)
