Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy focuses on the muscles of the face and mouth to create a healthy balance between orofacial structure and functions - including breathing, swallowing, speaking and posture.
When these functions are impaired, an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder (OMD) exists.
OMDs affect all ages and can effect an individual's quality of life based on the severity of the disorder and time left untreated.
Signs and Symptoms of OMDs
• Poor speech • Poor sleep or fatigue
• Drooling • Difficult swallowing
• Teeth clenching • ADD / ADHD
• Teeth grinding • Difficult chewing or eating
• Mouth breathing • Headaches
• Thumb/pacifier use • Tongue tie or lip tie
• Crooked teeth • Relapse of dental bite
• TMJ pain or jaw popping • Orofacial muscle pain
• Low tongue rest posture • Headaches
The goal of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is to help ensure proper oral rest posture. Proper oral rest posture exists when the tongue rests on the roof of the mouth with the lips closed, teeth not clenched, and using the nose to breath.
The mouth is for eating and talking, the nose for breathing.
An orofacial myofunctional evaluation can assess your child's muscular oral alignment during functional tasks and rest. A properly aligned tongue and lips can support the development of a nice, wide airway!
