2024-2025 French and Exploratory World Language Blog
Week of September 9-20
Students in grades five and six who are not in WIN are given the opportunity to explore each world language offered at the middle school. They have French this trimester. We spoke about the Olympic games in Paris, the monuments and sports. Now students are putting their attention on greetings and numbers to 20.
Level One French students are concentrating on understanding simple sentences and describing people, as well as greetings.
Level Two French students have started reading their first book about the great capybara Remy who lives in French Guyana. Students both read aloud and work on comprehension. They will also start to use the book to write a simple summary and apply new words from the story.
Level Two has finished the book about the capybara and are writing summaries.
Level One students are learning how to negate sentences and putting that information with basic verbs.
Exploratory French has been working on studying and copying the Haystacks of Monet and are busy with the monuments of Paris. They are also listening to short and simple stories in French.
Toward the end of the trimester, students in French 1 and 2 have been using their skills to start writing basic descriptions, with support and making sentences. They have also been presented with sentences that have been cut apart and students put them together again in order to develop the patterns of language.
Students in Exploratory French have been learning weather expressions, reviewing what they understand, learning about the First World War for Veterans' Day and looking at French speaking countries.
From the next trimester, students will begin learning German.

Students in both French 1 and French 2 are using all that they have previously learned to answer questions about themselves, both out loud and in written form. They are giving information about themselves, such as where they live, what they like including, foods, colors, sports and activities. Of course, the students in level two have more things that they can speak about and will continue to provide more information.
With the new trimester, Exploratory Classes are now learning Spanish. We are working on greetins, mumbers, colors and learning about where Spanish is spoken around the world.
We are happy to introduce our new Spanish teacher, Senora Pritchard who is coteaching Spanish Exploratory with me.
Students in Exploratory Spanish have been working on Spanish speaking country postcards. They are putting together information about a country and then illustrating and writing a postcard from that area. Prior to that, they were learning how to tell the weather in Spanish.
Students in level one French were working on the weather and on answering simple questions, about likes and dislikes, age, the weather, etc.
Students in level two French were also reviewing more complex questions such as the date, birthday, favorite foods, color, etc. They told where they would like to travel and what they wanted to study. Now, they are doing a review of the verbs Avoir and Etre.
