PHOTOSHOP

• An industry standard that is used pretty much every design career : graphic designer, interior designer, architecture, textiles, industrial designer...
• Very frustrating at first, there are a lot of different things you can do with photoshop, although it can be a bit confusing at first.
• We'll start slow

THE PEN TOOL

Most of tool used in photoshop! Master this and everything else in photoshop will be easy!

Section II

COLLAGE SILHOUETTE

Create 2 collage silhouettes using the pen tool in photoshop

Collage 1:

• Using two different photos create a contrast in colour
• Use a theme (ex. prairies vs city)

Collage 2:

• Create a collage using photos of yourself
• Use a theme (ex a picture of you in a regular setting, vs you playing sports

Section III

LOW POLY PORTRAIT

• Find a picture from the internet of someone’s face (make sure it is not a cartoon character)
• Download and open the picture in photoshop using File > Open.
• Follow along the following video, and use the tools in photoshop to create a polygon portrait

Section IV

REPETITION REPETITION REPETITION REPETITION:

Like the use of repetitious hooks in a song, repeating elements in a graphic design can be visually appealing.

ALIGNMENT:

Aligning elements in a visual and readable arrangement

PROXIMITY:

Grouping elements together so that you guide the viewer/reader to different parts of the message, adds unity to the message, instead a scattered mush of blah.

SPACE:

Using space wisely can allow ideas to be conveyed clearly with clarity

ASSIGNMENT MINIMALIST POSTER

Create your own minimalist poster!

Before you start can get frustrated with using Photoshop first remember this:

(command + alt + z) means undo, this will help when you screw up.

BEFORE STARTING YOUR OWN POSTER:

1. CHOOSE A MOVIE TO MAKE A MOVIE POSTER FOR

• Keep it decent (nothing inappropriate)
• Popular movies other people can get references from
• Movies that have memorable "artifacts" that are easily searchable online (ex. Dispicable me minions)

2. CHOOSE AN ARTIFACT FROM THE MOVIE

• Choose something that can be simply conveyed with a silhouette
• Make it easy to, don't overkill
• Keep it simple, don't clutter your poster!

3. DRAW OUT CONCEPT

• I don't care how bad you are at drawing, you must sketch out a plan before hand
• Fly it by me, I want to see your sketch, chances are I can help improve it
• Again, keep it simple, but not too simple
• Be clever, good design is "smart"

4. DESIGN POSTER IN PHOTOSHOP

• Use the skills learned in the first two tutorials to make a poster
• Make sure you set your paper size to 11" by 17" and dpi to 300
• Every time you create a new item/object create a new layer
• Choose a nice font, comic sans GROSS, and unacceptable!!

Section V

TINY PLANETS

Create a tiny planet with you standing on it!

1. Take a photo of yourself
2. Use the Pen Tool to accurately create a cut out of your picture
3. Find a wide image (search panoramic image) which showcase a full sky in the background.
4. Follow the tutorial shown on how to combine these elements to create your own tiny planet

SHOW YOUR TRUE COLOURS!

Use a photo of yourself to create a portrait that really shows your colours:

1. Take a photo of yourself, or use the same photo that you used in the previous photoshop module
2. Choose an image that you would like to overlay on your face (ex. use a country flag)
3. Follow the photoshop video below to overlay the image on your face (It’s a long video, I know!!)
