Time to get acquainted with a camera!
Using a DSLR camera, and some friends, try to recreate some of the shots you see below. (Hint: think background, middle ground, and fore ground)
Heads up: Camera's are expensive! No fooling around with the camera! You break, you buy!
Watch the following video to learn about the controls on your camera
A camera's sensitivity to light, the higher the number the more sensitive the camera is to light
How much the the iris of the lens opens during a photo, the greater the F-stop the farther you can shoot with the image being in focus.
How long the shutter is open for, faster the shutter speed means there is less time for light to enter the camera.
You will be creating a poster which shows off your understanding of the different settings on a DSLR camera.
Properly using the camera take photos of the same subject, from the same vantage point but change one of the settings (either ISO, F-stop, or shutter speed) from lowest to highest.
Download those photos from the camera into photoshop
Arrange the photos in a line on one poster in photoshop so you can see the differences between each setting.
You’ll need to use this photoshop tutorial to figure out how to make your poster, here you go!
Choosing the right white balance to match the lighting conditions is key to a successful photo.
Lighting conditions vary from scene to scene, and the camera needs a bit of help understanding the warmth/coldness of light AKA its temperature.
COLOR TEMPERATURE CHART
Lighting conditions create a certain ambience:
In order to replicate a natural lighting condition you must choose a lighting setting that matches the light in your scene. This is done with the WB button on the camera.
* Rule of thumb - the higher the Kelvin (K) the cooler the light.
Take multiple photos of a person's face using the different WB setting
Create a side by side poster in photoshop
LIGHTING CAN AFFECT THE APPEARANCE OF A PERSON
Lighting is a crucial aspect of photography portraiture, it can make a person look sad, bad, mad, and very awkward. The reason is because the face casts shadows distorting how a person looks.
Here are portraits of different faces from left to right (scary, serious, mysterious, distracted, awkward)
Watch the following video on the basic on how to set up lighting.
Step 1. Your job will be to create 8 different portraits of the same person, but you need to vary the lighting angle of the lights. Use the mannequin head example below to get an idea of the angles of light you need.
Step 2. Watch the photoshop tutorial below on how to use. brushes.
Step 3. Use the ‘best’ portrait photo, along with photoshop to create a graphic portrait much like the one shown.
