The PCCP Project supported 15 MacEwan undergraduate students, 2 former MacEwan students (now master's students at the University of Alberta), and two PhD students at other universities. In addition, in 2021, our team included an undergraduate student from Mexico who was funded through the Mitacs program. The undergraduate students conducted extensive literature reviews for the various papers and created knowledge mobilization outputs, including creating infographics, presentation slides, and videos. Working in teams, the undergraduate students coded thousands of social media posts. These students reviewed several drafts of survey questionnaires to help refine the flow and question-wording as well as ensure a match between the programmed/online instruments and final questionnaires (as approved by the Research Ethics Board at MacEwan). They also supported the writing of peer-reviewed articles by compiling lists of references from the various paper authors, formatting these reference lists, and checking the accuracy of numbers within the manuscript (and comparing the numbers to output files in SPSS, Stata, Amos, and R). The graduate students helped with writing papers, merging and formatting data files, and literature reviews.
These funded positions, ranging from 50 hours (one semester) to 500 hours, provided important opportunities to gain research experience and work alongside faculty mentors. Through their participation in the PCCP Project, students will improve their critical thinking skills, expand their literature search skills, improve their writing and oral presentation skills, and acquire multi-media communication skills.
