Warmup Activity: What do you know about democracy? In your own words define "democracy" as best you can WITHOUT using a search engine (or a dictionary) to find the definition. Submit your own definition to your teacher.
Our English word "democracy" comes from two Greek words
Demos = people
Kratia = power
When a group of people allow for the power to lay in the hands of the general public, we call that democracy.
Who do you think has the right to be democratic? Only certain people? Everyone? This is an opinion question. Respond in your own words and submit your response to your teacher.
Confederation opened up the opportunity for those living in Canada to have greater access to things from around the country and from other provinces via the CPR.
Confederation gave the new country a single representative for all those living in Canada to look up to.
Unfortunately, Canada was not democratic in a truly inclusive way for another 100 years after Confederation took place.
It was not until 1918 that all women of the age of 21 or over the age of 21 could vote.
And, it was not until 1960 that all indigenous people could vote.
Does this sound democratic? Express your thoughts and send them in to your teacher
Over time, the requirements for participating in Canada's democracy have become increasingly more inclusive, less restricting, and fair.
This was the case in some of your grandparents’ lifetimes. Over 100 years ago, only half of you, perhaps less, would be able to vote once you reached the age of 21. The requirements for voting became less strict over time.
Choose a side, write a response, and submit it to your teacher.
In your response come up with three reasons to support your side.
You should research your answer to support your arguments, but you may also respond just from the thoughts that come into your head.
Aim for 300 words in your response.
If you agree you might begin: "I think people younger than the age of 18 should be able to vote in Canada because _________, _______, and ______."
If you disagree you might begin: "I think the current rules about voting age are fine because ________, _______, _______."
You do not have to fully agree or disagree. You could (and should!) specify an age that you think is more appropriate. Do you think grade 7s should be able to vote? grade 6s? Why do you or do you not think that is a good idea?
