Accelerated Reader (AR)

Adams is an Accelerated Reader campus. Students are expected to complete quizzes on books that they have read so that they can self-monitor their reading comprehension skills. We have several different goals for each student, catered to where they are as a reader. This program has been specially designed to help encourage our students to grow as readers.

Kinder - 5th Grade

AR Goals (modified)

All students in K-5 will work towards their end of year point goals.

AR Certification Levels

Students begin in Kinder on Ready Reader. Their goal is then to continue moving up the certification levels during their time at Adams Elementary. At the beginning of each year, students pick up where they left off the previous year. Contact your child's teacher or Ms. Hawkins in the library to find out what level your child is working towards.

Tips for helping your child be successful in AR:

  • Read the book 2-3 times. This is especially important as they are just starting out. Once your child starts to make 100s on AR tests repeatedly, they can try just reading the book once or twice.

  • Ask your child basic questions about the book before they take a quiz to gauge whether or not they understood and remember the story. If they are struggling to recall the story, have them read the book again.

  • Make sure your child is the one logging in. You can guide them and show them what to click on, but have them do all the clicking and typing. The goal is for them to be able to log in independently, even at a kindergarten level.

  • Read the test questions out loud to them if they need it. This is not cheating, as long as the child is the one answering the question!

  • Use the book to help find answers that they are unsure of. Again, this is not cheating, it is a skill that we teach students to use during test-taking. However, this does not take the place of reading the book.

Pre-K

Even though Pre-K does not do AR, we designed a reading program for them as well. Check out this presentation specifically for our Pre-K students.
