Elementary STEM BOB Structure:
Elementary STEM BOB will consist of monthly STEM challenges and an in-person final exhibition and challenge. Monthly support meetings are scheduled to help coaches feel comfortable leading students through the challenges.
Challenges will be shared with teams to help students prepare for the final challenge. The final challenge will utilize materials and skills that have been used throughout the previous challenges, but the details will not be shared ahead of time. The final challenge will consist of two parts, the first part completed prior to the final event and the second part completed on-site. STEM BOB finals is on March 26th.

Elementary STEM BOB Requirements:

Schools must submit a commitment form to receive STEM materials to support the competition.
Elementary schools can have as many students participate on the school level for the monthly challenges as they wish.
Only 8 students will be able to attend the final in-person challenge.
Students should read (or have read to them) the excerpts from the books that accompany the monthly challenges.
The 8 students attending the final event should read (or have read to them) the entire book for the final challenge.
Teams must use the required STEM materials and can use additional materials from the approved supplemental list for all challenges.
No other materials can be used when completing the school-level or final challenges.
Efficient use of materials will be factor in scoring challenges.
Coaches may assist teams with the first three challenges but the majority of the work should be done by the students.
At the final challenge, coaches will sit in a designated area. Students may approach coaches to ask questions but coaches may not otherwise communicate with their teams.

Earning points:
Monthly challenge submissions will be assessed using THIS RUBRIC.
Monthly challenge submissions must be sent via THIS FORM.
Points will be awarded for submissions based on the rubric assessment.
Final challenges will be assessed using the same RUBRIC.
Points will be awarded for submissions based on the rubric assessment.
Total cumulative points from monthly and final challenges will determine the winners.

Schools will order books based on individual needs and budget. For the STEM BOB program fewer books are needed than for the traditional BOB program since students are not required to read all of the books. Some schools will order 1 to 2 hardcover copies that will remain on the library shelf when not in use, and the remainder in paperback which will be stored during years the books are not on the list.
Paperback copies that will not be cataloged can be ordered from Barnes and Noble or Old Coat. Hardcover copies should be ordered with shelf-ready processing from Follet, Perma-Bound or another library vendor. Donors Choose has been a source of funding for some schools, with paperback books provided by the vendors available through that program.
Best practice is that no more than 5 copies of a book be cataloged in Destiny - more than 5 copies is considered a class set and is against our user agreement.
