PA vests are new this year. Pick up and return the vest at (TBD) along with the class list.
An After-School Parent Assistant ("PA") is a current Discovery Falcon parent or guardian ("Parent") who supports instructors of maximum 3 after-school classes on the day for which their student is registered. PA must be cleared by LiveScan and have a valid Tuberculosis Test or TB Risk Assessment, and be available for the duration of the class (60-75 minutes) and session (10-11 weeks). At the end of the session, PAs are eligible to receive tuition reimbursement, prorated for each week they assisted.
Note: This is not a school volunteer role. Please do not consult school office staff.
Role of a Parent Assistant (PA)
Ensure that students are in the correct location AND picked up on time, staying with children until an approved adult picks up.
Ensure school property is used appropriately, cleaned up, and secured after use.
Communicate in a timely manner with Parents, Instructors/Vendors, and the After-School team about:
Class cancellations
Make up classes
Performances, if any
Responsibilities
Introduce yourself via email to registered Parents and Instructor(s)/Vendor(s).
Arrive before dismissal at 3:00 (12:25 or 12:40 on Wednesdays).
Assist the Instructor(s) in taking attendance.
Clean up and lock any doors before leaving school premises.
Taking attendance
If a student is absent, check against the daily absence list (shared by the After-School team) to see if the student was in school that day. If the student was in school, then search for the student on campus: search the student's classroom and playground. If student is not found after 10 minutes, notify the primary contact listed on the class list.
At the end of class
Stay with the children in the class location until an approved adult picks up. DO NOT release children to the playground or send them to the office. If pick up is more than 5 minutes late, call the primary contact listed on the class list.
Always stay with students in the class location.
When the instructor is late: until instructor arrives.
In case of a last-minute class cancellation: until all students are picked up.
Do not send students to the office. The school office may be closed.
Notify the parent or guardian listed on the class list when:
A child is missing, ill, or injured.
The instructor is missing, ill, or injured.
Other incidents at your discretion.
Make up classes
Help facilitate timely communication between the Vendor and Parents in the event of a makeup class. Coordinate with the After-School team if needed.
Disruptive behavior
Assist instructor with routine behavior management if asked. If a student becomes disruptive in class and continues to have difficulty even with the instructor's and Assistant's support and redirection, contact their Parent and ask them to come and assist for the remainder of the class. Work with the vendor in determining if Parent support is needed for the remaining classes. Be familiar with the vendor's policy on repeated instances of disruptive behavior.
Other
Keep class lists and emergency contact information confidential.
Please do not interfere with instruction or make groupings of students on your own.
Give feedback/suggestions privately to instructors and not during class time.
Do not share photos on social media or other shared platforms.
No experience in the subject area is required. You learn alongside your student!
