This academic year, the Junior High School (JHS) academic coordinator, in collaboration with the Foreign English Teacher (FET), has developed a plan to integrate English with the Arts for grades 7 through 9. Each month will feature a different theme designed to enhance students' interest in learning English, assess their comprehension, expand their vocabulary, and, most importantly, encourage them to engage in speaking and learning the language. The teachers are committed to ensuring students achieve desirable outcomes after each monthly lesson.
In the series of pictures and videos below, you can see some of our typical classroom activities: students listening as the teacher reads the text aloud, unlocking new vocabulary, and the local teacher assisting by translating or checking students' understanding, often by asking them to explain the meaning in Chinese. We also pair high-achieving students with those who need more support to practice dialogues together. When working on group conversations, we ensure the groups are balanced to promote equal participation. Additionally, we continue to practice note-taking, where students are required to write down key details, unfamiliar words, and include Chinese translations or example sentences to help reinforce their learning.
The Introduction to Arts class examines the differences between drawing and painting. In the following weeks, students will learn the basics of art, such as the color wheel and different shapes. To practice their knowledge, students will create a drawing or painting that uses shapes and colors to show a farm scene.
In celebration of World Teacher's Day, our class will write letters to two of their favorite teachers. They will also write poems. Before this, the teachers talked about the differences between formal and informal letters, and the two kinds of poetry: free verse and rhymed verse.
Halloween falls in November; therefore, the FET and LET have designated Fiction as the theme for this month. Students are expected to create a short storybook as their project, which will be displayed in the library for future reference.
Over the past two months, I chose to integrate two widely celebrated holidays: Christmas (December) and New Year (January). For December, the students created a handprint Christmas tree, where they wrote down their wishes and goals for 2025.
To celebrate the New Year, they made a list of resolutions and personal goals. In addition, they created Chinese lantern crafts in celebration of the Lunar New Year.
This semester, my co-teachers and I have decided to use the Let's Talk in English magazine as our reference material. The magazine offers a variety of topics, enriched vocabulary, engaging activities, and cultural content such as festivals that students can relate to and apply in their daily lives. Moreover, it serves as a valuable tool in supporting the school's goal of enhancing students' speaking and listening skills, while also encouraging them to actively participate in conversations.
As part of their output, students engaged in guided conversation and dialogue activities designed to enhance their speaking and listening skills. They practiced short role-plays, asking and answering questions based on real-life situations such as ordering food, asking for directions, or making introductions. These dialogues were performed in pairs or small groups, allowing students to apply vocabulary and sentence patterns in a communicative context.
