Creating Your Constellation

How Teaching & Learning Constellations Work

True to Universal Design for Learning (UDL), the learner decides on the type of content and how they will engage based on personal learning preferences, location, and time. Learning content is organized into tables called Stars. The content on each Star is specific to one type of content (i.e. all reading, all listening, etc.).Rows within each table are color coded and labeled to show connections between Stars. If the learner wants to explore a variety of content types that connect, they can move between stars and stay in the same row.

How you navigate between stars (tables) is directed by you, your reason for learning, and what you seek to accomplish. The shape of your learning constellation will be unique and complete when you have achieved your learning objective; whatever you determine that to be.

How each Star (Table) Works:

To engage through different learning modalities, select content from different stars (tables). The types of stars are described below:

• Watch: Courses in OneHE include videos, minimal reading, and optional discussion forums. Courses take about 20 minutes and you’ll earn a digital badge. If you complete a course you can submit for an impact badge if you apply something you learned. Activities are meant for application with students (usually) and take 5 minutes to review.

• Discuss: All Courses in OneHE include optional discussion forums. The OneHE Community includes forums for discussion with all OneHE Members (over 2,000 teaching and learning professionals. In the Private CSUCI Community within OneHE, there are discussion forums for certain topics, books from the Read Stars, and more. To participate in these forums does not require engagement in OneHE Content. These forums are a good place to share other content that should be added to the stars.

• Read: For a deeper dive or just the convenience of reading from your phone, computer, tablet, or downloading and printing, the reading selections coincide with the other content within the same column. Essentially, you can take a OneHE course or read the chapter/article in the same column, or do both to reinforce the other. All readings are free and electronic, with any books directly linking you to Broome Library. Login with your MyCI credentials and you will have access.

• Listen: Learn on the go, on a walk, outside, on a drive, etc. Podcasts are selected to provoke thought around the selected topics. Think of them like qualitative data that bring the human element and tangential perspective to the other content.
