My FIrst FOrray into On-Line Teaching
It was my intention to teach Dance in History as a blended course. Three quarters through summer the course was at risk of being canceled due to low enrollment. In a bold move to save it, my chair allowed me to take it on-line. It filled, in one day.
- Course Prep
- I began prepping a Website, Google docs, Syllabus, Padlets, Voicethreads, electronic reserves and Screencastomatic lectures, without one thought to accessibility, I was concerned with being visually stimulating, effective, and human.
- DRP Surprise
- A week before school was to begin I received an email from DRP that I had a student with a visual impairment. I knew in my heart what I had created was not going to work. Especially the website, but I really wanted to hold on to the applications, lectures, and overall structure of the course. They were important components to creating a community that would aid in the success of the students.
- Teaching and Learning to the Rescue!
- After contacting Teaching and Learning Innovation for assistance, Kristi and Jill came to my rescue! Kristi pointed me in the right direction and taught me how to rework the format of my website and restructure my google docs. Jill encouraged me to reach out to the student. It was important that I start the class with the structure in place and not change it once in motion. The student assured me that she indeed could use Voice thread and Padlet which were my biggest concerns.
- My intention is to ensure students learn, if I keep this core value in perspective, I make more human choices.

As a former commercial dancer, I was concerned that my strengths as a teacher were embodied and only effective in a live classroom. Translating how I engage and communicate with students into a digital classroom heavily relied on exciting applications and a bit of 'je ne sais quoi' borrowed from my past life.

Having the students view but also curate and collect examples to demonstrate their understanding of the material was essential.

I demonstrate through movement while I explain historical and cultural nuance present in dance. However I was concerned I wouldn't see their eyes glaze over if my lecture became banal.
My lectures often had their own "cold open." I also often did quick video "check-ins" I wanted to seem like a real person, not someone unavailable.
