Part of setting students up for success begins with providing equal access to resources that help them manage the technology. Providing students with a video and/or written directions with images makes sure all students can be successful with the tool - so everyone can move quickly to learning, not learning a tool.
In most cases, if you stick with Google Applications and Canvas, there are very few (if any) videos or written guides you will need to create to show students 'how' to use the tool. Before you make something, be sure to search the following resources first:
Canvas Video Guides
Canvas Instructor Guides
Canvas Student Guides
TLI Knowledge Base
Search Youtube and Google
Google's suite of apps make Synchronous and Asynchronous Collaboration easy for you and students.

Creating and managing Google Docs and slides works the same for both apps.

By placing links in your template, you can create a link from one document to the next and/or back to your course, text, resources, etc.
Google Docs and Slides make for great templates. However, if each small group or individual student needs their own copy of your template, you can use this 'hack' so when students click on the link to your template, it automatically generates a new copy. Each student or group can fill in their own copy of your template, allowing you to create a structure to guide student thinking and project development.
Collaborations allow you generate a Google Doc directly within Canvas and share with individual students or groups. This way by creating the Collaboration, you will already have access to the document. However, this will only generate a blank Google Doc. So, if you want to add a template, you can do so pretty easily by copying and pasting your template onto each Collaboration Doc. It takes a little extra time to copy your template to each doc, but typically less than 5 minutes.
