How will you assess groups?
Will everyone get the same score?
Will individuals be graded separately?
Or a combination of both?
Is requiring group work equitable during COVID-19?
Are there opt out options? What do they include?
The answer depends again on the learning outcomes (academic and career readiness).
Writing your rubric(s) before finalizing project directions will ensure your directions align with your assessment tool. Rubrics can be timely to write and often need a few test runs as you iron out the final details. Here's a few suggestions to help clarify your rubric criteria:
Do your own assignment and use your rubric to score it
Apply your rubric to previous students submissions
Have current students use your rubric to evaluate previous students' submissions (of course remove names) and ask students what is missing or what they'd add to the rubric!
Have current students peer review the work of other groups or eachother using the rubric and ask students what is missing or what they'd add to the rubric!
Define roles with responsibilities or ask students to create and define roles (*Equity Asset Building)
Let students set consequences in their contracts
Have students do Group Feedback evaluations at certain milestones
Have students reflect on their own contributions as well as the contributions of group members
There may be some aspects of a project where you want to give group credit and individual credit. Unless you have students submit a project both as a group and individually, there are a few things to consider:
You will need to complete a rubric for each student
You will want to copy and paste group comments to a Word document or Google Document to keep group scores and comments consistent for each group member
Designate on the rubric which points are from the group portion and which are from the individual
