I selected this piece because it is my first time writing a full technical report following IEEE style. Although I have worked in the tech industry for 3 years, none of my positions demanded the publication or creation of a full technical report for either the public or management/stakeholders.
I believe this piece reflects my career development as a communicator. When I first started, I often over-elaborated on my written and verbal communication. While I was aiming for completeness and correctness, I was sacrificing conciseness and concreteness. Writing this report helped me focus on the key technical aspects I needed to showcase on the report while keeping communication as clear and simple as possible, without omitting any important information or data to support my arguments.
This piece pushed me out of my comfort zone as it made me learn a new citation and formatting standard, which will prove to be very useful moving forward as a professional engineer and researcher. By making me learn new styles and structures, my technical writing was elevated to a higher level, therefore, I am very glad to have endured the challenge this report presented to me.
This is, in my opinion, the best piece I have produced as a communicator so far. It makes use of the 7C's and axioms of communication while boarding a very novel and technical topic: The legislation and ethics surrounding artificial intelligence and its testing and certification standards.
I selected this piece for my showcase because it is the first technical brochure I have created, and because it consists of two versions, each one suiting a different type of audience. I believe these formats are very useful to convey information in a summarized and attractive way to both the general public and a technical audience.
This piece reflects the development I have had as a communicator, now being able to understand that the audience is a critical part of any communication, and capable of adapting my tone and style to meet the expectations of different kinds of listeners and readers.
This piece pushed me out of my comfort zone as it was a new experience for me, so I had to research suitable software design tools to help me elaborate the handouts easily. Trying to summarize long pieces of technical details and information was harder than I expected, but I am glad with the final outcome of the project. The combination of graphics and figures ended up being fundamental to transmit all the ideas I intended to elaborate on.
While I am proud of the final outcome of the project, I would not consider this piece my best work. Although I put a lot of effort into it, I believe there is a large room for improvement for future handout design by improving the graphics and summarizing information even more, to make more attractive to the eye and easier to follow.
I selected this project as part of my portfolio because it makes direct use of the rhetoric triangle and the 7C's of the axioms of communication in the form of an oral presentation. A presentation is probably the easiest way to assess the fluency and persuasion of a message, and this becomes even more relevant if the message being transmitted is highly technical, as complex information is often harder to deliver.
This piece reflects my development as a communicator mainly in terms of fluency and persuasion, as well as clarity and conciseness, which were key in the completion of this project. One of the requirements it had was a time constraint of 7-8 minutes in total, and since I was working in a team, in contrast of the previous projects in which I was working alone, I had to limit my time to 1-2 minutes maximum. I was in charge of presenting the main idea of the argument, therefore the fact that I was able to comply with this requirement showcases my improvements in concreteness, correctness and conciseness in my communication.
For most people, public speaking tends to be a serious challenge and definitely a step out of their comfort zone. In my case however, due to my personality, this has never been the case, as I enjoy speaking to both small and large groups of people. This does not imply I took the assignment lightly, on the contrary, I had to work harder to make sure I was not entering into a "complacency" zone, but rather pushing myself to deliver the best I could.
While I would not classify this project as my best piece of work so far, it is definitely in a good position on my list, as I was very pleased with the outcome, specially because it was done in a team setting, and teamwork is a great skill to have in any industry.
I selected this project because, although it was a software development project, it involved a lot of communication aspects that were key to its success. The project was developed for a real-world client, an accounting firm that wanted to start having a digital presence and therefore needed a website. By applying the axioms of communication, I was able to conduct multiple meetings with the client to define the project requirements and demonstrate the site's functionality and features once the project was finalized.
This piece showcases my development as a communicator applied to a real-world scenario, dealing with project stakeholders and being able to communicate technical progress and constraints in a common language suited for a non-technical audience. On top of internal communications, the design of the website content itself also involved using the axioms of communication, as it was intended to reach a wide online audience with different types of technical knowledge in the client's field (Accounting and Finance).
This project definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, as I had no previous experience in leading the communications with a client, presenting progress reports and performing live demonstrations of the features and capabilities developed by our team. It was a great learning experience that integrated technical and soft skills simultaneously.
I consider this my best work, along with the Technical Report presented above. This is mainly because this project closely resembles real-life scenarios and involves multiple sociotechnical aspects. Our live demonstration was accompanied by a technical presentation as well, in which the axioms of communication played a critical role.
