The main problems that people with epilepsy face on a daily basis include; fear of having a seizure, anxiety, stress, depression, injury of the brain, suicidal thoughts and drug abuse. As well as this people with epilepsy can lose there job or driving license and facing unfair judgement from other people.
1-2 in 100 people in New Zealand develop epilepsy at some point in their life. It often starts in childhood but people of any age can develop epilepsy. It is mostly caused by genetics but sometimes can be caused by damage to the brain cells. According to a 2018 survey "although there is no data on the number of people affected by epilepsy in New Zealand, it is thought to be from 45 to 50 thousand, with approximately 2,000 people newly diagnosed each year."
