Reflection:
As I reflect on the completion of this assignment, I can't help but to think back to my undergrad studies and the tons of powerpoint presentations that I had to read and listen to. I can also remember some being tough to learn from while others were designed very well! With my current knowledge of dual coding theory and multimedia theory, I can attest to their importance on learning. The two slides that I chose to "redesign" are from an 8th grade Georgia Studies class. As you can see, the original slides are very busy and the design makes them kind of hard to follow. The first slide does not include any type of multimedia, while the second slides does include a graphic, it is jam packed with text and is only able to be read when zoomed in on. Following the dual coding theory and multimedia theory, I redesigned the first slide by organizing the text information in a way that reflects the key principle that recall and recognition is enhanced by showing information with visuals AND text. By providing a photo of Mr. Soto, I feel as though my students will be more apt to remember the important information given about him and his influence of the state of Georgia. I redesigned the second slide with the same mindset as the first - soft color for the background and I organized the text in a way that is easier to read. However, instead of using a picture or graphic, I provided a video about the Barrier Islands of Georgia as context for the important information being relayed on the slide. I try to use as many visuals as I can in my classes, especially when we have to take notes on a certain topic. I do, however, try to use a variety of different types of media. This assignment was a great reminder on how important it is to remember the dual coding and multimedia theories when designing powerpoints to present to our students.
