Element 5, color, is represented by this flower arrangement in that there are multiple colors that draw the viewer's attention. It also evoked emotions from my wife when I brought them home.
This is a picture of the softball field where I coach before our most recent game. It represents element 2, line, in which the lines of the field create positive space (fair territory) and negative space (foul territory).
This photo of my daughter at the Georgia Aquarium represents element 4, size/scale. One can tell that she is much smaller than the shark in the background, even though the distance between them is not equal.
An approach look, down a par 5, at a golf course that I recently played represents element 1, space. Similar to the softball field, the space between the trees is the positive space in this scenario, just without "lines."
This photo of my daughter a few days after birth, represents principle 2, contrast. The Panthers jersey in black and blue, contrasts well on the all white blanket behind her.
Principle 1, focal points, is represented by this picture of one of my dogs, Zola. It is clear that she is the focal point, with the background around her being somewhat blurry.
This picture I recently took for my wife of our breaker box at home, represents principle 5, rhythm/pattern. The breakers are aligned in a similar pattern so that there is an order in which they are labeled.
This photo I took of a fireworks show after a recent baseball game, represents principle 4, movement. This still shot of fireworks leads to the viewer to able to envision the firework going up and then out, in a meandering way.
This photo I took of my wife and kids at a local flower festival is a combination of element 5, color and principle 1, focal point. Viewers of this photo can tell that the focal point of the photo is my family, but can also be drawn to the vibrant colors of the flowers on the sign in the background.
This picture of my daughter at bath time is a combo of principle 2, contrast and element 3, shape/form. The contrast is obvious with the almost all white background. The shape of her body becomes ever more clear as it moves out of the bubbles.
I can provide the recipe for this photo of BBQ chicken nachos that I took this week, but it does represent a combination of element 2, line and principle 5, rhythm/pattern. The BBQ sauce drizzle provides a pattern if zig zag lines while the nachos are aligned in a similar pattern underneath.
This picture of a recent concert I attended represents a combo of element 2, space and principle 3, balance. The stage creates a space for the band to perform all the while the photo feels balanced by coming from the point of view of the patron.
Gestalt's theory of closure is represented by this picture of my nephew at his high school graduation. Viewers of this photo can perceive closure to an unseen high school body of work.
This picture of my daughter at the park represents Gestalt's theory of continuity. You cannot see where she is headed, nor where the path ends, but your mind can lead you to assume it continues on. Whether that be to another side of the park, or to Narnia.
This photo of a craft beer menu that I took at a local brewery represents Gestalt's theory of similarity. The menu clearly goes above and below what is pictured. And the craft beer was organized by style and represent by numbers and colors.
Lastly, Gestalt's theory of proximity is represented by this photo of golf clubs. They are all grouped closely which leads the view to assume they are all part of a matching set of golf clubs.
Reflection:
This assignment was a great time getting outside, taking photos and looking at recent photos and applying them to what we read for class this week. It opened my mind to the different factors of visual media and design. Being a middle school special education teacher, I can foresee myself using a lot of this elements and principles in my classes in the future. With kids this day seemingly being glued to their phones and borderline obsessed with photos online, I can use this to my advantage and built it into a lesson plan to maximize learning for my students!
