Application: One of our team members has a coworker who is negative all the time. She is less productive and will spend hours watching YouTube videos rather than working. She also has another coworker who is extremely upbeat and has been very successful in her work. It's very apparent the difference that attitude has made in their work.
The reading states that, "Job satisfaction is probably the most important job attitude." How you feel about your work will really make an impact on your outward attitude.
Personal Application: One of our team members worked at Walmart and she felt apathetic a lot of the time. However, one of her team members was very positive and productive and it got her to work better and have a good time doing it.
Video Application: In the video, everyone was very negative and in result, it didn't motivate anyone to participate or pay attention. If there was a positive influence, the outcome could have been very different.
Recommendations: We came up with a couple of ways to make work "happier":
The reading talks about how there is a high degree of overlap between job satisfaction, work attitude, and organizational commitment. When people feel satisfied about what they are doing, they will have a more positive attitude, and thus be more committed to their work.
Video Application: In the video, it's clear that they aren't grateful for their job, and they're coming up with any excuse to leave work. Their environment has become toxic because of their personal attitudes towards the job.
Video Application: They are clearly not getting any work done due to their attitudes towards the work. If they would come together and set clear, exciting goals, it could change the environment.
We think that having a positive attitude is an asset and contributes directly towards a more productive work environment. It benefits everyone around you - managers, employees, clients, etc. It's a catalyst that draws the team psyche toward a more productive and positive mindset. If you have a positive work attitude, you will foster an environment that ensures the success of your team and team members. When looking at the questions above, often times people think that work is "boring" however, what they don't realize it that our negative attitude toward work has made it such. If we can start looking at the positives in our work, it'll make it that much more meaningful. Having positive people on a team helps set a unified vision which drives the team towards meeting its goals.
Through the optics of positive vision, we were able to instinctively draw the best qualities of each member and contribute those qualities for the benefit of the team as a whole. We have great collaborations when we get together, and people feel safe to share their thoughts. It's a nontoxic and a nonthreatening environment, that fosters an outcome-based work ethic within our team. By creating a positive energy within our team, we have experienced minimal conflicts, nurtured a friendly team environment and culminated high-quality work.
