All levels of management have responsibilities. Some of these may be similar throughout the different management levels, while others are drastically different. Accountability, meekness, and motivation are just a few responsibilities that all levels of management have. Systematic study is one responsibility that should follow you as you climb that pyramid of management.
Systematic study is when you take a problem and look at it from many different perspectives before committing to what will hopefully be the best solution. Many problems arise in management and there is more than one solution. Often times it’s a natural reflex for a person to just go with their gut and choose the solution they think will have the best outcome without considering the many other possibilities. Management has the responsibility to use systematic study to look at all the possible solutions, discuss them with their team members, and then decide as a team which solution is going to be best for this problem (Andrade, 2019).
How, as front-line managers, can we implement systematic study? First, we need to keep those gut feelings in check. The best way to accomplish this is by team participation. Asking our team members for their perspectives will give us a wide range of possible solutions to consider and discuss helping to ensure that we are indeed selecting the best solution to our problem. Scheduling a team meeting is an excellent way to start getting everyone involved. In this meeting you might find it helpful to split up into smaller groups and come up with a joint idea to share with the whole team. When doing this, don't be afraid to delegate tasks as this is a great way to keep each person actively engaged. Second, the solution doesn't need to be found in one day. Make sure to take the time to think it through. Scheduling out more than one meeting for the same problem is not a bad thing.
In order to implement systematic study properly you need both team participation as well as time analyzing a problem. If you were to take one of these elements away it wouldn't work as efficiently. Systematic study can be an extremely useful tool for managers because it can help them develop their critical thinking skills which will be needed as they climb that pyramid of management.
