Rather than look at mosaic floor tiles or the textures of the ground like the assignment prompted, I wanted to look at what is deep under our feet. I had brainstormed with things like pipes, cables, graves and basements. I had a vast range of ideas for this assignment. I wanted to create my artwork about both man-made and natural things/occurrences beneath our feet, so I chose to incorporate boot footprints and tools (representing industrial objects) for my man-made aspect, and skeletons and sea shells for my natural aspect. Below are images of my progress with this sixth-form assignment, having freshly uncovered my casts of my chosen objects. I first had to make the moulds to proceed with making the casts as to not ruin any of the items that were used.Â
I later painted the moulds of the skull and the shells with metallic silver and copper spray paints and used acrylic paint to add further details such as rust and tarnish, to give them a man-made appearance despite being a natural material.
I also painted the moulds of the footprint and the tools with green and brown spray paints and used acrylic paint to add further details such as moss and grass, to give them a natural, organic appearance despite being man-made things. As if reclaimed by nature.
