Background
What is a simulation?
‘Simulation is a technique to replace or amplify real experiences with guided experiences, often immersive in nature, that evoke or replicate substantial aspects of the real world in a fully safe, instructive and interactive fashion.’
Gaba DM. (2007) The future vision of simulation in healthcare. Simulation in Healthcare; 2:126-135.
What is a simulated placement?
Simulated placements will give students the opportunity to learn in a safe environment through a variety of mediums, such as: Scenario's, role play, and virtual reality.
Here's Ed Rimmer, giving an overview of what's involved in a simulated placement.
Why do simulated placements exist?
Simulated placements allow students to practice skills and prepare for their clinical work in a safe space. It also allows you to gain experience of skills which may be difficult to gain in clinical practice.
What will you gain from a simulated placement?
Opportunity to develop a range of skills in a variety of realistic environments.
Ensures students gain a good foundational knowledge prior to a clinical placement.
Development of skills are undertaken in a safe environment that won't compromise patient safety.
Ensures practice and development of skills before application in a real-life scenario.
What will you be doing on your simulated placement?
The simulations are designed to be as realistic as possible - it will look and sound like a real setting!
Case studies are usually based on real life situations in different scenarios.
These case studies may require you to role play through a scenario
This is a safe learning environment - should you make a mistake, we can learn from these together when we debrief! It is all part of the learning process!
