In the months following the shooting, Gayles worked tirelessly on her rehabilitation, aiming to return to basketball and continue her athletic career. Her determination and perseverance in overcoming this traumatic event were widely recognized, as she expressed a desire to continue playing basketball and eventually pursue a career in the sport.
Prior to the shooting, Gayles had committed to play college basketball at the University of Southern California (USC), where she was set to join their team. Despite the challenges, she remained committed to her goals and showed great courage in the face of adversity.Â
She was on the court for USC for the 1st time not even 2 years after her injuries of 9 gunshot wound with 18 holes.
